The advantage of staying in North Adams is of course the better food options plus museums, thrifting etc. FOR GUESTS WITH MOBILITY ISSUES: Like many Victorian houses, the apartment has 2 entrances. For guests with mobility issues we recommend only taking the “grand” entrance located on the front of the house (please let us know in advance and we will open it for you). Otherwise, normally our guests prefer to use the back “servants” entrance as it is closer to parking. It is quite steep (not a full 21st century staircase) and narrow. DESCRIPTION Chase Hill Estate is tucked away on a hill in the middle of North Adams quite literally overlooking Mass MoCA. Although we are a stone’s through from downtown, we are not on a public street. You’ll be staying at a fully detached Victorian with panoramic views of Mass MoCA and the city below, surrounded by gardens and a carriage path—the hill is entirely private with our guests enjoying full access to all outdoor gardens and perks (multiple fire pits, an outdoor finish Sauna etc). For over a century, the two mansions on top of the hill housed the owners of the factory below it (first the Chases of the Sampson Shoe factory, then the Gallup Jones’s of Arnold Print Works—now Mass MoCA) The main mansion is now home to the Floating Tower Artist Retreat, where we house refugee and immigrant artists (primarily musicians). Our residency is free of charge to the musicians and is directly supported by proceeds from this Airbnb. This apartment is located on the upper 2 floors of the Small Mansion. It is fully private with no shared spaces. Your apartment features: - private entrance (from a separate porch) - a fully outfitted kitchen/dining for 4, with tall ceilings and exposed beams - a living room with a huge quartz center window, preserved sealed sections of Victorian wallpaper, and a smart tv - an oversized master bedroom with its own sitting area (couch & chairs) and a separate Juliette balcony overlooking the grand stairway - 2nd large bedroom overlooking the garden - a windowed bathroom with an original 1873 claw foot tub - Two additional garrett bedrooms (twin bed and a double bed) are located on the apartment’s second level. The Garrett floor doesn’t have central heat so we mostly keep these rooms closed off during winter, unless guests are ok with portable radiators (they work fine). - laundry (washer & drier) in unit - all kinds of coffee implements + fresh espresso beans provided We hope you enjoy your stay at Chase Hill! Known to be a show stopper during foliage with its variegated shades of purple and gold, Chase Hill’s most famous tree is the eye-catching giant oak-leaved beech (the only one of its kind in Western Mass). We are a friendly community of artists and musicians. Do not be alarmed if on occasion you encounter a mandolin player or a water color painter on one of the lawns of the estate. Chase Hill Estate is the centerpiece of the historic Freeman Grove District, now the location of Mass MoCA, Sanford & Kid antiques, the Porches Inn and Uno Park. George W. Chase was president of the Sampson Shoe Factory (a building formerly located across from what is now Mass MoCA’s Main Gate) and specifically designed both mansions to overlook his factory from a hilltop to the west. Although it feels like a little secluded piece of the country, Chase Hill is in fact located right in Central North Adams within very brief walking distance to everything in downtown North Adams (3 mins leisurely walk downhill to Mass MoCA and 5 minutes walking distance to Main Street cafes, restaurants and art galleries). We recommend leaving your car at the estate and walking anywhere downtown. We are also about a 10 minute drive from the Clark, Williamstown, Williams and MCLA. 20-30 mins to various Ski resorts. 40 mins to Tanglewood. Both apartments at the Small Mansion are entirely separate with private entrances from different porches. The house, with its multiple outdoor terraces and porches, feels very private. Unfortunately due to severe allergies and asthma our no-pet policy is strict.
