Description

This listing is for Suite 1, a large 250 square foot bedroom that features a redwood ceiling and grasscloth wallpaper. There is a king bed, two dressers and a desk in the room. Directly adjacent is a large 4 piece private bathroom. The space One Orange Centre is a 5907 sq. ft. home built of native limestone and redwood in 1965 by two of of Frank Lloyd Wright's students. All three renovated guest suites are available for rest and quiet relaxation in the hills above St. Donatus, Iowa. Every room has a view of the Tete Des Mortes Valley. The suites are separate from the rest of the house with its own kitchenette and entrance. There are ongoing smaller restoration projects still underway here in other parts of the house. This restoration is an ongoing labor of love for FLW architecture and the peace and quiet I felt the first time I set foot on this estate. Electrostatic air handling throughout the house with a separate air zone for the guest suites make for cleaner, safer air for everyone. Two of the suites have king beds, the smaller suite has a queen bed. Each room has a large en suite bathroom with a shower and separate soaking tub. There is a separate guest kitchenette. There are some smaller ongoing projects to complete the full restoration of this house and on the grounds. The current rates reflect this minor inconvenience. The views are spectacular. The sunsets can take your breath away. Plenty of parking. Kalmes' Restaurant is just down the hill if you choose to go out for an authentic Luxembourg lunch or dinner. Many restaurants in Dubuque or Bellevue will tempt your appetite. The main kitchen is available for the occasional meal or celebratory feast for guests. Live music is available nearby in the Gehlen Barn just down the hill or at several nearby venues. Bodhi and Bella, and Beto, my Great Pyrenees dogs, are gentle giants who primarily stay in my office/ bedroom wing or in the dog run. I must warn you that like all Great Pyrenees, they do shed, but, they are kept off the guest wing unless guests want them to visit. I vacuum twice a day to keep this at a minimum. They are often alerted before the ADT system and are available for walks around the 25- acre property. Guest access There is a separate guest entrance off the south of the house where the deck to the third floor is located. When you arrive, you will be given the access code to the guest door at the rear of the house on this deck. I prefer that you only use this door for coming and going. Too many lost keys over the past four years. There is parking directly below the guest entrance as well as on the sportscourt at the base of the final leg of the driveway During your stay I live here with my three Great Pyrenees dogs and am generally on premises either on my office /bedroom wing or in one of the barns or greenhouse well away from the 1900 square foot guest wing. I can set up an itinerary of things you can do nearby, brewery tours, wine tastings, state parks, exploring local caves, tours of other local Mid Century homes and buildings. I am also a creativity practitioner and creative problem solving facilitator , trained at SUNY-Buffalo State, so if creative problem solving sessions can also be incorporated into your stay. One Orange Centre is a place to Begin and to Begin Again, a place with luxury hotel-like accommodations in a scenic country setting. I am currently working on developing a farm-to-table program where people can work in the garden and tour and experience other sustainable and innovative agricultural projects. Other things to note St. Donatus is one of the oldest towns in Iowa. the Gehlen House Barn, the oldest barn in Iowa is just down the hill. The town of 129 people was originally settled by people from Luxembourg, descendants of whom still frequently visit St. Donatus. There is an outdoor Stations of the Cross on the grounds of the Catholic Church directly adjacent to One Orange Centre. Kalmes' Restaurant, a longtime staple of Jackson County dining, it right down the hill. There is a new tap room across the street in the old Gehlen Barn where 19 beers, some local wines, and seltzers are on tap. Weekends, there is live music at the barn. There are two outdoor cameras. One is located on the carport and monitors that door and areas to the south including the parking area. The other is on the corner of the kitchen patio and monitors the driveway
