Kihei has six miles of Sunkissed beaches. Kihei is less crowded. Kihei is considered to be much more “authentic Maui”. Kihei is more laid back. The longest beach walk in Maui is in Kihei. Kihei is more private, intimate, and affordable. Kihei has the least amount of rain of anywhere on Island and is much more laid back. Kihei is closer to: Haleakala (hiking), road to Hana, Iao Valley, and the airport. Kihei is also closer to Paia, Makawao, Upcountry, Kahului, and Maalaea. Kihei is only 15 minutes from the main airport in Kahului and Kaanapali is an hour. Kihei (the condo area of the south side) has more family restaurants than the condo area of the west side. Wailea (the luxury area of the south side) is a quieter area than Kaanapali (the luxury area of the west side). Higher end resorts like Four Seasons, Andaz, Grand Wailea, and Kealani are all in Wailea which is just 5 miles away from Kihei. Wailea also has world class golf courses and an award winning spa. The nicest shopping is also in Wailea (very upscale). Only one road in and out of the west side and if the road gets shut down due to an accident, you could be trapped.
