Written by one of our guests. Real life on the Big Island By KATE POSS | March 19, 2023 Our home for the next three nights was at the northern tip of the Big Island in the tiny town of Kapa’au. Our 1940s-era home is divided into three rentals: A big house and two apartments. Our apartment was once Krisann’s bedroom. We liked our apartment’s old windows, its comfortable kitchen, and its modern bathroom. This was the childhood home of Krisann Santiago, a third-generation Big Islander, and descendant of grandparents who moved to the Big Island from Puerto Rico to work the sugar cane fields. Krisann and her sister grew up running among sugar cane, which has since given way to ranches. Krisann and her Hilo-born husband Samuel modernized the home in 2019. The couple and their grown son live next door and are friendly and gladly share the story of the home. Krisann seemed to dance when talking of her love of the property, and wanting to share the aloha spirit of the land. Krisann and Samuel cared for her mom for 18 years, and she lived out most of her last years at the family home. A celebration of her life, with more than a hundred guests, was planned for March 18, 2023. Bill and I spent an afternoon under a broad lychee nut tree, which graced the yard while Krisann was growing up. 𝗡𝗢𝗧𝗘: Our Home was built in 1941, we did do some upgrades however neither of our units is child-proof and NOT suitable for children under the age of 4 and Infants. We live on the same property in our own home, about 250 feet away from our vacation rentals. Both properties are private and separate from each other. Sam and Krisann’s place is located in Kapaau, Hawaii, United States. Travelers who are looking to get away from the tourist-trap scene at the resorts, Come to beautiful historical North Kohala the birthplace of King Kamehameha the Great. The town of Hawi is known for its unique shops, restaurants, and its Saturday farmer's market. It's also the bicycle turnaround point for the annual Ironman World Championship held every October. The town of Kapaau is where the original statue of King Kamehameha the Great resides. Continuing on Akoni Pule Highway, you will end up on the lookout for the breathtaking beautiful Pololu Valley. North Kohala is home to many activities including Kohala Zipline, scenic coastal rides on ATV, or horseback. Be sure to take a scenic drive up Kohala mountain road to Waimea and experience one of the best views of Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa Mountains, and an incredible view of South Kohala with its resorts and the breathtaking view of the ocean. Take a short drive of 35 to 40 minutes along the scenic coastline to enjoy some of the island's best sandy beaches. Whale watching is seasonal (December through April), but sea turtle and dolphin sightings occur all year round. This is the country we cannot guarantee what the weather will be like. We do get some rain and wind, and a lot of time we get neither. Public transportation is extremely limited. Best to rent a car. The property is within walking distance of Kapaau town where you can find Pomaika'i Cafe coffee shop, L&L Barbecue, Kingsview Cafe, and Gill's Lanai. Walking distance to beautiful Kamehameha Park which has a lot of amenities such as a public swimming pool skateboard park, tennis courts, baseball field, a small Golf Course, and a Gymnasium. Each unit has its own private entrance, bath, food prep, and living area. Quiet hours are 10 PM till 7 AM. Daily housekeeping service is NOT included in the rental rate. This is a rural agricultural area. At times there could be some domestic and wild animal noise, as well as some mowing and noise from the neighboring properties. There are roosters in the North Kohala area, but we have NONE by our vacation rental location.
