Description

Our house is in Ocean View, a rural area on the slopes of Mauna Loa. Expansive decks overlook the ocean below, from South Point north up the coast about 15 miles, & provide amazing sunset viewing. There's an acre of grounds with paths, water features, tropical plants, & a koi pond. There are 2 bedrooms with king beds, 2 baths, a well equipped kitchen & comfy living room. Beaches are about 1/2 hour drive, & Kilauea at the National Park is about 1 hr. Please read more info below before booking. The space This is our home half the year, and we are happy to share it with guests the other half. It has a fully stocked kitchen should you decide to eat in; TVs, Bose speakers, lots of places on the lanai to lounge around or admire the view. This is a rural area, and you will likely hear a rooster crowing in the early morning if you are light sleeper; other than that, an occasional car or light truck going by is about the only noise to break the silence. Please note, the house is 1 1/2 hrs. from the Kona airport along a two lane road, 12 miles of which is winding and requires attention. Our house is at an elevation of almost 3000 ft., so it is much cooler than at ocean level. You may actually need a sweater in the evening! Please note you will only see reviews during part of the year, because we or family are at our house the rest of the time. Our house has all you need--big decks to relax on, nice grounds to walk, a rural neighborhood with hills for exercise near the house. The kitchen has the usual appliances, plus the requisite coffeemaker and  toaster oven, plus a coffee grinder and baking equipment, but alas, no dishwasher. There are TVs in the living room and the second bedroom, both with Roku; there is very reliable and fast WiFi throughout. Heaters help if nights are cool at our elevation of about 2800 feet. On the other hand, ceiling fans throughout will keep the house cool in warmer weather, but there's no need for a/c at this elevation. The little town of Ocean View has grocery stores, gas stations, a few small restaurants and a gift shop. There is a tiny excellent restaurant in OV itself, called Tai Shan. There is a farmers' market locally, and there are more in Naalehu, about 20 minutes away. Naalehu also has the famous Punaluu Bakery, well known for malasadas, Hawaiian sweet bread, and an extensive gift shop. You can drive to South Point about 12 miles away and sit on the cliffs watching the Pacific, or hike down to Green Sand Beach. The Kahuku Unit of the National Park has hiking trails on a former 160,000 acre ranch within 10 minutes of our house. Punaluu black sand beach is about a half hour drive, and the main unit of the National Park, with Kileauea often putting on a lava show, is a little over an hour away. Back in the direction of Kona, beaches, snorkeling, the Hawaiian Refuge Village and other sights are 1/2 hr to an hour away. Hilo in the other direction past the national park is about 1 1/2 hrs to the east. Our co-host is next door and can help with anything you would need, and is also a great source of information. She will be by to feed the koi in the pond and water plants, but will not enter the house or disturb you, and she can let you know when she will be by if you prefer. Because of the high decks, and the koi pond, please consider carefully before booking if you have children who might climb and fall. Also, please check the other details below for more information about our house. This is our home, and not a full time rental property, so we think you will find it a relaxing place to spend time after exploring all the things the Big Island has to offer. Guest access You have access to the entire house, and property except the garage. There is ample parking on site. Other things to note Our co-host will be by to feed the Koi and care for the plants in the yard and on the deck, but she will not need access to the house unless there's some problem that needs attention. Like all houses in this area of the island, we rely on a catchment system for all but drinking water and ask you to conserve. Our co-host will supply the drinking water for the dispenser in the kitchen, so it's not necessary to bring bottled water. We do have a cooler, beach chairs, beach towels and an umbrella, but, because of hygienic reasons, we do not provide snorkeling gear. Our co-host can provide access to the washer, but we ask that you limit the use to a single load, again because of water constraints, and we ask that you line dry. Please flush only toilet paper, and pull the shower curtain all the way closed, so it can air and prevent mildew. Mahalo in advance for your care of our property! Registration Details TA019214592001
