A lovely, private and very clean cottage with all amenities for a comfortable and peaceful stay. Quiet, and cool the year around, we are a 20 minute walk from the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden and well situated for touring to Waipio Valley, Akaka Falls, Volcano National Park, and many other destinations in the area. Come see the real Hawaii.... lush, tropical, friendly and far less touristy than the Kona side. We would love to have you come and stay! Please take a look at our reviews. Aloha! Our country estate is in Onomea, 6 miles north of Hilo, on 5 tropical acres with garden and ocean views. The Garden Suite at Onomea is a private cottage with views of flowering royal Poinciana trees, mango, lychee, mountain apple trees, monkeypod trees, and coconut palms. The most repeated description by our guests is 'peaceful'. The suite has a studio layout... bedroom, living room and kitchenette all in one very ample space, and a lovely stone-tiled bath with very high ceilings and gorgeous light. The kitchenette is equipped with an array of countertop electric cooking appliances and a full sized refrigerator. In lieu of a stove or oven there is a gas barbecue on the covered lanai. The queen bed sleeps two and there is a twin bed that sleeps one additional. Our road is one of the loveliest in all of Hawaii. Artists frequently come to our road, set up an easel and paint views from out in front of our property. Within walking distance is the beautiful Hawaii Tropical Botanic Gardens. Next to the Botanic Garden is the old donkey trail to Onomea Bay.....fed by a mountain stream, this is a truly beautiful coastal spot with a serene majesty. By car, we are less than 10 miles to the 400+ foot Akaka Falls State Park and we are about 40 miles eboth Volcano National Park to the south and Waipio Valley to the north.... Just two of many other attractions in the area. Most dining and shopping is in Hilo but there are two wonderful venues along the nearby Scenic Highway.... What's Shakin' and the hundred year old Low Store... a convenience store from old plantation days with coffee, snacks and lunch fare. Both venues have covered tables for enjoying a respite and a bit to eat. Sleeps two in queen bed and 1 additional in a twin bed. Private entry in a stand alone building. (cottage suite) Last minute bookings (under three weeks) MAY be discounted. At our discretion, 2 day or even 1 day stays are sometimes possible if our calendar permits. Rates are not uniform for short term stays. Please request a quote. Touring and adventure suggestions in our area: By car, within 15 minutes, are the magnificent 419 foot high Akaka Falls, the charming village of Honomu; and the nearby city of Hilo, center of commerce on the east slope of Mauna Kea and home to a renowned Hilo Farmers Market open daily. Some other places/activities we recommend you think about during your stay, here on the east side of the Island of Hawaii...... Volcano National Park, Waipaio Tide Pools, Mauna Kea Astronomy visitors center, Imiloa Museum in Hilo; three zipline adventures are nearby; several nearby beach parks... snorkeling, swimmng, surfing and boogie boarding; horseback riding is available literally across the street from us as well as up in Kohala and Waipio Valley; The 13,980 foot summit of Mauna Kea is home to 13 international telescopes. The work done with these telescopes are redefining our understanding of of the universe (a visitor center is open daily at the 9,000 foot level); Alahanui Park - Hot Spring Pond; the Lyman Museum, the Tsunami Museum, the Hilo zoo, Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut farm and factory; and.... Volcano National Park! You are welcome to ramble around nearly everywhere around our five acre property. When you arrive, we'll usually greet you and show you in. If we cannot be home for your arrival, we'll leave the door unlocked for you so you can come at any time after check in time. We are situated along the single-lane Old Onomea Road... one of the prettiest roads on the island. Lined with royal palms along it's entire length and barely traveled on by cars, it makes for a lovely to walk to the nearby Hawaii Tropical Botanic Garden at Onomea Bay, or to one of the local roadside lunch stands. I will usually meet with my guests upon arrival and made suggestions for touring and dining. We have lots of local knowledge about places to go and how best to make the best of your time here, whether you're staying just a few days or for a month. This specific area.... Onomea... is one of the lovliest neighborhoods on the island. It's peaceful and unhurried with no 'downside' surprises such as noisy neighbors or an unsightly approach to the house. Our home is on five acres of mixed lawn, garden and forest. It's very private and during your stay you will rarely encounter my wife and I unless you reach out by text or phone. You'll need to have a car to get here, but a regular sedan is quite sufficient to reach us. We are a short distance off the main road. From here you can easily reach downtown Hilo in about 8 minutes. Aside from the many attractions on this side of the island, Hilo offers shopping and dining expericences of many kinds. I'm available to guide you to all sorts of touring destinations based on your interests. I have ready suggestions for where to find the best Hawaiian, Japanese, Korean, Thai or Vietnamese food, where to find a great burger, prime rib, or sushi and where to find live music and evening fun. There is an air conditioner in the suite but at our elevation and on this, the windward side of the island, it's rare that people use it. Temperatures range, year-round, from about 62 to 70 at night and from 75 to 86 in daytime. Our warmest months are from mid August to mid November but even then, the suite is very comfortable all day long. There are also several fans and when you open screened doorways on both sides of the suite, there's a very gentle cross-breeze. We have basic beach gear available... beach towels, umbrella, ice chest, swim fins and face masks, and boogie boards. Beach towels are stored in the suite. Please request the other items. A Pack n Play for babies or toddlers is available upon advance request. (we usually keep it at another rental so I need time to bring it here)
