If you like low tech country peacefulness, and homes full of good spirits and deep aloha, just hele mai (come). . . and welcome to our century old plantation home. Egan and I live in the closed off downstairs area of the house, while you are welcome to enjoy the entire upstairs. You may be sharing the bathroom and kitchen with other guests IF The Blue Room has been rented. Check the listing to make sure. If you love old homes and are interested in how people lived during the sugar plantation era of Hawai'i a hundred years ago, my home is a perfect opportunity to experience just that. This house was built in 1920, and I recently had the remarkable opportunity to talk story with a woman who lived here in the 1930's as a young girl. It was fascinating! Watch the movie "Picture Bride" to get an idea of the sugar plantation life. I have good reason to suspect my home was built in getting ready for the arrival of such a picture bride. Please check out all my listings so you get a good overview of the entire property. And also please BE WARNED!!! THERE IS A ROOSTER ON THE PROPERTY! And that means early morning crowing! And again welcome to old Hawai'i! As for the room, I spent two summers visiting the Cook Islands in the 1990's, and have filled this room with treasures collected during those visits. Please enjoy the hanging quilt, and the book that documents the amazing talents of Cook Island Maori appliqué/embroidery artists. In general, my home is clean, cozy, quaint and comfortable, but NOT luxurious. The roosters are loud in the morning, and the coqui frogs are loud at night. You will want ear plugs if you are a light sleeper. When the surf is up and conditions are right, you can hear the waves smashing and peeling down the sea cliffs. So we have lots of "country" noise--but not much urban clatter. Also, I must apologize, we do NOT have TV here! Never have and never will. We do, of course, have wifi. And finally, please know that this room is for a maximum of TWO people, and I do consider children and babies people. This room is NOT appropriate for families of three or more who sleep together in a family bed, so please do not make a reservation here if there are three or more in your party. Also, as a very large and very rural outer island in the middle of the Pacific, public transportation is nearly non-existent here. You MUST rent a car if you want to enjoy your stay at my place and partake in the adventures this island has to offer. You are welcome to wander the front yard and cruise on the front porch, and we'll share seasonal food as I collect it . You are also welcome to use the kitchen to create your own small meals. And the coffee/tea bar is always open! I am here to make your visit as easy and as pleasant as possible. I'm happy to suggest activities, restaurants, and sites of interest. I can loan you books, maps, and direct you to web sites and other local resources. Please let me know your needs and interests, and I will be as involved or as scarce as you like! I live within walking distance of the finest botanical garden on the island and perhaps in the state. It truly is the "Onomea Scenic Route" and I recommend you walk it, drive it, get to know it. My home is also literally a 5 minute drive to Hilo's finest surf spot. . . the famous Honoli'i! We have waterfalls, beaches, jungle hikes, active volcanos! What we DON'T have are a lot of restaurants or services open on Sunday evening. And our internet connections can be sketchy sometimes. When you visit Hilo, check out where we are on a GLOBE, and then please remember where we are on the planet!! Public transportation is nearly non-existent on this island. You will need a car to get to where you want to go. Follow the directions I send you via Airbnb on the day of your arrival. DO NOT FOLLOW YOUR PHONE MAP APP!! It is WRONG and will get you lost. Please note: THERE IS A ROOSTER LOUD COQUI FROGS ON THIS PROPERTY!
