Both studios have lanais overlooking the meadow and ocean. 2 Room Cottages Purple Passionflower Rainbow Cottage Purple Passionflower has a kitchenette with all the amenities, a full bathroom, a king size bed in the master bedroom and two twins in the second bedroom. Rainbow Cottage is the same but has a queen in master bedroom. Both cottages have lanais overlooking the meadow and ocean. There is a gate to access our property and you will receive the gate code when you make your reservation. Guests can use the pool, hot springs, BBQ and 1.2 mile rainforest trail around the 20 acre property. The neighborhood includes 6 farm properties on a 2 mile long paved road, We are 4 miles from Pahoa, 5 miles from Kalapana and about 6 miles from the beach. Recent lava flow can be observed nearby. Hilo is 24 miles away, Volcanoes National Park 40 miles and the Mauna Kea Observatory, where you can view through telescopes, is 50 miles. Kona is 100 miles over the saddle road and takes about 2 hours. Puna Rainforest Retreat is special because you can stay in a private place in a natural setting away from the busy neighborhoods and resorts but are still close enough to enjoy the attractions. We are centrally located with many attractions within a short distance. The retreat is quiet and has no light pollution at night for unbelievable skies. Neighboring properties include La’akea Permaculture Farm and rainforest. Opihakao Road, only 1 mile away provides beach access to the Red Road long the pUna coast. Natural steam vents can be experienced on the property and funky Pahoa is 4 miles away offering fantastic organic food and supplies. Pohiki Bay is 8 miles away and offer paddleboarding, surfing, body boarding and swimming. Kalapana and the new Kaimu Black Sand Beach are about 7 miles away near Uncle Robert’s kava bar and Sunday farmers market. Recent lava flows are accessible nearby. The 20 acre retreat is within the Puna Forest Reserve and our grounds are surrounded by rainforest that is part of the retreat. Steam vents developed on the property from recent eruption and produce clean steam from boiling groundwater. Volcanic heated hot spring is available for guests and it is relaxing to lay on the hot ground. Hawaiian Natives own the non-private property within the reserve to protect the Native Ohia forest that is sacred to them. The reserve is endangered species habitat for the Endangered Hawaiian Owl, Hawk, and Bat. While these species are otherwise very rare they are often seen at the retreat. Researchers continue to identify new species and there is ongoing collaboration to control invasives. The Ohia Forest has giant ferns, diverse species of orchids, epiphytic plants, strawberry guava, geckos, praying mantis and songbirds. The rainforest is very dense and so we ask guests to remain on the grounds or trail for their safety unless we discuss the specific hazards. The retreat property surrounding the grounds feature many skylights into lava tubes as well as lava trees and caves. The Puna Rainforest is invigorating to see, taste, hear and feel.
