'The Barrens' is a Grand Victorian Sea Captain's home in Plymouth's waterfront district overlooking piers and historic sites. The Harbor Suite is a spacious light blue room with water views, queen bed, sitting area, full bath, TV, mini-fridge, and microwave. In Plymouth terms, this is a relatively 'young' home: an 1845 Grand Victorian (now 175 years old) that has been updated with technology and conveniences but retains its period charm. Our second-floor guest area also features a sunroom and library/lounge where free coffee is dispensed with a Keurig machine. The library, by the way, is full of many unique volumes dedicated to Plymouth history and our local and regional environment. Guest access is through stairs at the back of the house. Come slowly up the driveway and then left into a private parking area. Up the back stairs on the second floor are two common areas: the sun porch and our library. You are welcome as well to use the two patios at the back, one under the grape arbor and the other on the harbor side of the building. The first floor is our private living space: please respect that. Whenever possible we interact with our guests. We are often busy though, with our environmental work, our historic Town Meeting form of government and, like you, with life. But feel free to contact us through the Airbnb system and we can either offer our insights into this wonderful community or point you in the right direction. What a neighborhood! A ten minute walk to the Forefathers Monument on Allerton, a 90-second walk to Pilgrim Hall Museum. Look out over our back fence at the Hedge House, headquarters of the Plymouth Antiquarian Society. Walk a block and you're staring at our whale watch fleet. Despite Covid there are still dozens of restaurants and shopping venues open. Mayflower II is expected back in August, and she and the Plymouth Rock, beautiful Brewster Gardens on historic Town Brook, several dozen restaurants, the Spire Center (concerts and theatre), 13 Tercentenary monuments, craft breweries, restaurants (from Korean to Thai to Italian to classic New England fried fish and lobster houses are all in walking distance. We could go on.. Well, maybe we will a little. Five minutes away are four fabulous historical sites: the 1820 Courthouse (just renovated and now linked to Plymouth's new town hall); Town Square where the head of Metacomet was once displayed, the 1749 Courthouse where John Adams once practiced law still stands and the First Church (being renovated) houses three restored Tiffany windows and, rising up behind the square, Burial Hill... If you're driving we have one private space for each of our three rooms. You can walk most everywhere regardless of the weather: we're close to everything. There are also GATRA buses to various parts of town. Pedicabs on the waterfront in the summer. If you come by train get off at the Kingston station (then take an Uber or taxi). If you're coming by bus get off at Plymouth/Exit 5 and then try an Uber or local taxi. Plymouth has a small but professional airport if you're flying in. You can take a Captain John boat to Provincetown and back again in a day. Plymouth is a wonderful destination and is within an hour’s drive of Boston, P-Town, and Newport, Rhode Island. Expect sweet surprises, local knowledge, remarkable access to history and special insights into the region's natural wonders. Sharl founded several environmental organizations and is deeply involved in this special community - both its government and its environment - and Frank is similarly engaged and for a decade covered town government for the local newspaper. Frank also offers highly rated 'insiders' tour of historic Plymouth through Airbnb's 'experiences.' The Barrens,' you might ask? The name refers to the Coastal Pine "Barrens," a unique ecoregion found in only three places in the world today: New Jersey, Long Island, and Southeastern Massachusetts (including Cape Cod and the Islands). The entryway stairs are steep: there is one flight on the exterior, leading to the keypad, then another flight to the sun porch. Elderly and infirm guests may find those steps challenging. Please also note that children under 12 are not allowed.
