Enjoy the solitude of Hawaii's rainforest on a lovely 20 acre estate. This ocean view home is super clean, on gated private property and very comfortable for up to 10 guests. Rainforest sounds, starry skies and sunshine abound far from neighborhoods but only 4 miles from Pahoa. Enjoy the 1.2 mile rainforest trail, steam vents and hot spring soaking tubs, and swimming pool. TA-008-365-8240-01 The space This 20 acre estate is surrounded by rainforest within the Puna Forest Reserve, 4 miles from Pahoa. The grounds are very peaceful with bananas, fruit orchard, avocados, palms, and many flowers. The house has an open floor plan, 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, sweeping meadow and blue ocean views. Surrounded by rainforest sounds you will sleep peacefully and wake to a sunrise over the ocean from the two master bedrooms. This place is a slice of heaven! There are two master bedrooms with one King and one Queen size bed upstairs each with access to the upper lanai offering a view of the meadow and ocean. The King is a firm Tempur-pedic. There is a full bathroom with separate shower and claw foot tub. The spiral staircase leads downstairs to the main floor with two more bedrooms featuring a queen in one and two twin beds in the other. Large living room, kitchen and dining area and a separate 600 sq ft screened mutli-purpose room with seating and placements for 21 people. The house was designed to channel the trade winds and stays cool enough inside without air conditioning. The kitchen is very well equipped with a huge fridge, ice-maker, Vita-Mixer and all the amenities. Wifi internet and cell phones/ cell data work throughout the house. Feel free to walk around the property and enjoy the abundance. We offer rainforest trail where you can experience the unique Ohia and Fern ecosystem up close as well as panoramic view of the ocean. Nighttime temperatures are perfect for restful sleep. We value your privacy and don’t require interaction unless you want to say hi or have questions. This is a great place to base your Big Island adventures. The Puna Rainforest Retreat includes the 4 bedroom house and four cottages; Green Bamboo, Blue Ginger, Lavender Orchid and Yellow Hibiscus. See listings below for more information. There is also a listing for the whole estate which sleeps 22 people. The Four Cottages: (2 studios and (2) two bedroom cottages) Studios Blue Ginger Green Bamboo Blue Ginger and Green Bamboo each have a full kitchen with all the amenities, a full bathroom and a cozy queen bed and a Futon. Both studios have lanais overlooking the meadow and ocean. 2 Room Cottages Purple Passion Rainbow Purple Passion and Rainbow cottages have a kitchenette with all the amenities, a full bathroom, a queen size bed in the master bedroom and two twins (trundle) in the second bedroom. Each have lanais overlooking the meadow and ocean. Guest access There is a gate to access our property. We value your privacy and don’t require interaction for check in or checkout unless you want to say hello or have questions. The property is very private and quiet. Your host is onsite. Guests can use the swimming pool, soaking tubs, BBQ and 1.2 mile rainforest steam vent trail around the 20 acre property. Guests are also invited to eat fruit from the orchard including lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, banana, soursop, guava and avocado. Other things to note Steam vents have established on the lower property, over 500 feet from the houses, and temperatures have stabilized at 197 F. Steam varies from barely visible to over 100 ft tall when it rains. Please do not touch the steam as it is hot and could hurt you. The steam has been tested by USGS many times. There are no harmful gasses present. The 20 acre retreat is within the Puna Forest Reserve and our grounds are surrounded by rainforest that is part of the retreat. Hawaiian Natives own the non-private property within the reserve to protect the Native Ohia forest that is sacred to them. The reserve was acquired by the Trust for Public Lands and transferred to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. The reserve is endangered species habitat for the Endangered Hawaiian Owl, Hawk, and Bat. While these species are otherwise very rare they are often observed here. Researchers continue to identify new species in this unique ecosystem and there is ongoing collaboration to control invasives. Extensive work is underway on the property to control invasive species and encourage native species. The Ohia Forest has giant ferns, diverse orchids, epiphytic plants, strawberry guava, moss, passion fruit, geckos, praying mantis and songbirds. The rainforest is very dense and so we ask guests to remain on the grounds for their safety unless we discuss the specific hazards. The retreat property surrounding the grounds feature many skylights into lava tubes as well as lava trees and caves. The Puna Rainforest is invigorating to see, taste, hear and feel. the property has a 1.2 mile steam vent trail through the rainforest for guests. This property has a no-pet policy. Trained service animals are welcome and are not subject to a pet fee. Please note that service animals must be housebroken and under your control at all times. You are liable for any damages caused by the service animal.
