The spiral staircase leads downstairs to the main floor with two more bedrooms, one with a queen and the other with either two twins or a king. Both cottages have kitchenettes(range, oven, mini-fridge and freezer, microwave) and lanais overlooking the meadow and ocean. The estate is perfect for families or groups where privacy and togetherness have the perfect balance. The retreat is peaceful, quiet and has no light pollution at night for unbelievable skies. Our nighttime temperatures are perfect for restful sleep. Close to all the attractions in Puna. Lava Flow Info: Our property is safe. Fissure 8 is/was about 3 miles away and 240 vertical feet downhill. Steam vents have established on the lower property, over 500 feet from the houses, and temperatures have stabilized at about 150 F. Steam varies from barely visible to over 100 ft tall when it rains. Please do not touch the steam as it is hot and could hurt you. The steam is tested by USGS weekly and there are no harmful gasses present. There is a gate to access our property and you will receive the gate code when you make your reservation. We value your privacy and don’t require interaction for check in or checkout unless you want to say hello or have questions. The property is very safe, private and quiet. Guests can use the pool, soaking tubs, BBQ's and 1.2 mile rainforest trail around the 20 acre property. Guests are also invited to eat fruit from the orchard including lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, banana, soursop, guava, passion fruit and avocado. You will have the entire property so no other guests will be there. The estate has excellent wireless internet, yoga room and several lanais. Large lawn areas are great for outdoor events. We are available throughout your stay if issues arise. We can walk the primary host through the property at check-in to familiarize them if desired. We live in a very safe, rural area and have a property gate. Hilo is only 24 miles away, Volcanoes National Park 40 miles and the Mauna Kea Observatory is 50 miles. Kona is 100 miles and takes about 2 hours. Puna Rainforest Estate is special because you can stay in a private place with natural settings away from the busy neighborhoods and resorts but are still close enough to enjoy the attractions. Pahoa town is 4 miles away offering fantastic restaurants, groceries and supplies. Pohoiki Bay is 8 miles away and offers beach walking, recent lava flow viewing and hot springs. Kalapana and Uncle Robert’s are about 7 miles away. Results of the recent eruption can be observed 2 miles away at Leilani Estates. New beaches have developed along the coast from the recent eruption and there are many places to see results of the 2018 eruption. The 20 acre retreat is within the Puna Forest Reserve and our grounds are surrounded by rainforest that is part of the retreat. Hawaiian Natives own the non-private property within the reserve to protect the Native Ohia forest that is sacred to them. The reserve was acquired by the Trust for Public Lands and transferred to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. The reserve is habitat for the Endangered Hawaiian Owl, Hawk, and Bat. While these species are otherwise very rare they are often seen at the retreat. The Ohia forest has giant ferns, diverse species of orchids, epiphytic plants, strawberry guava, passion fruit, geckos, praying mantis and songbirds. The rainforest is very dense and so we ask guests to remain on the grounds and trails for their safety unless we discuss the specific hazards. The retreat property surrounding the grounds feature many skylights into lava tubes as well as lava trees and caves. The Puna Rainforest is invigorating to see, taste, hear and feel.
