Discover the charm of The Whalehouse Guest Suite, a private two-story apartment inside a breathtaking historic mansion. Once the residence of Herman Melville's sister, this exquisite estate has been named "Top 10 Best Overnight Getaways in the South Coast & RI" by South Coast Almanac! Easy access to downtown, Whaling Museum, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard ferries, galleries and restaurants. Free street parking. Featured on Magnolia Network, Boston Globe, NYTimes,AMC, Hulu & more. The Guest Suite is a thoughtfully designed two-floor apartment in the former servant's quarters of the home – exposed brick, tin ceilings and a wood fireplace give the space a historic feel with modern amenities. The Guest Suite sleeps 2 comfortably, has its own private entrance, and comes fully furnished. Perfect for: • Exploring New Bedford, Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket – The Whalehouse is only .7mi from the ferry! • Walking to downtown and exploring our city's rich history, museums, galleries, shops, bars, and eateries. • A romantic getaway for two – make a reservation at one of our favorite restaurants in Downtown or Padanaram Village. We have a list of our favorites! The first floor has kitchenette, living room with beautiful West Elm sofa bed, smart TV and a dining nook. On the second floor you will find your bedroom with a queen sized bed, a beautiful sun-filled bathroom with small stand up shower, and walk in closet. Location: The Whalehouse is located in this historic West End of New Bedford – conveniently walkable to downtown's amenities. • Your private entrance is on Orchard Street (perpendicular to Madison). • There is FREE on street parking on Orchard Street. Park on the West side of the street (the side opposite The Whalehouse). • There is absolutely NO parking on Madison Street at any time (including weekends). This parking is reserved for residents (please help us continue to have a great relationship with our neighbors by parking on Orchard Street. Thank you!) We will stay in touch via Airbnb! The Whalehouse is located in the historic West End district of New Bedford. Take a walk around the neighborhood for a glimpse into the "Whaling City" past - well-kept whaling mansions and beautiful estates surround this area. Check out the historic Downtown, and our port –  one of the last working fishing ports in the country! As you look upon the property and the surrounding mansions, you can see how perfect Melville's words feel as he vividly describes the homes' facades. It's easy to see how he could describe New Bedford as "the dearest place to live in, in all New England." • The Whalehouse is a very short .5 mile walk to Downtown and our working port, which is filled with shops, restaurants, galleries, the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center and the ferry to Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and Cuttyhunk. • Parking is also ample Downtown should you care to drive; on-street parking is metered, and there is also a parking garage on Elm Street. • New Bedford beaches are also close by to the south, and larger beaches, such as Horseneck Beach or scenic Little Compton, are a quick 25 minute drive away! • There is FREE on street parking on Orchard Street, which is perpendicular to Madison. Park on the West side of the street (the side opposite The Whalehouse). • There is absolutely NO parking on Madison Street at any time (including weekends). This parking is reserved for residents (please help us continue to have a great relationship with our neighbors by parking on Orchard Street. Thank you!) Notes for our guests: • The Whalehouse has unique, historic architecture and things that have aged through time. If you love old homes, this is the place for you! If you'd like a modern home or scratch-free environment, this house may not be a good fit. • The Whalehouse is located in the historic West End of New Bedford, conveniently walkable to downtown's amenities. Please note that while it is not directly in the city center, it is a bustling area so street noise is not uncommon. • Beautiful Windmill window ACs are installed in the bedroom on the second floor. Ceiling fans are installed into first floor. This historic house does not come with central air. • Please note that the kitchen is not equipped with a full stove – however there is an induction hot plate, toaster oven, microwave and coffee maker. • Bathroom includes a small 30" stand up shower, but no tub.
