Take it easy at this unique and tranquil getaway. Nestled in the rolling hills of northeast Iowa, the Gehlen House Apartment offers year-round accommodations for calming getaways or a weekend away with that someone special. Located on the first floor of the Gehlen House Inn, one of 34 area buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the apartment has been completely remodeled and updated in 2025, offering a beautiful space for you to unwind. The space The Gehlen House where the apartment is located was established in 1848 by Peter Gehlen, an immigrant from Olm, Luxembourg. The house is built from native limestone quarried from the hills around the village of St. Donatus. Over the years the Gehlen House has served travelers and the community at large, having been a post office, a road-side tavern, and a doll museum. In it's current capacity, the Gehlen House is an inn, providing six private bedrooms with a shared living room, kitchen and upper deck, as well as this one bedroom apartment located in the lower level. In the back of the property is the oldest barn in Iowa, built in 1839. It has been renovated to offer space for small events and weddings, and now houses our microbrewery, Beer in the Barn Brewery. The barn is open to the public and we serve out of the tap room Thursday and Friday evenings, and Saturday and Sunday starting at noon, April through January 1st. Live music is offered at least once per weekend, usually on Sundays, and other activities such as trivia, euchre and Karaoke are offered throughout the month. Our event schedule is viewable on FB at Gehlen Barn & Inn. The apartment has one bedroom and the sleeper sofa in the living room provides an additional space for two guests to sleep. The apartment has a fully equipped and stocked kitchen, a small eating area and a living room with a 55" TV. There is a small washer and dryer in the bathroom. The apartment was completely renovated and updated in 2025. Directly across the street is Kalmes Restaurant, offering a wide variety of foods, including some Luxembourg dishes. St. Donatus is very proud of it's Luxembourg roots and many of the area residents are of Luxembourg decent. Guest access Guest have use of the entire apartment. There is a gas grill on the upper deck on the north side of the building that you are welcome to use. The barn behind the inn has great outdoor seating areas that guests are welcome to use as well. A keypad is located on the front entry door to the apartment and you will be provided with the active code and instructions for check in a few days prior to your arrival.
