Historic Schoolhouse at Big Sky Bison Ranch

Welcome to the newly renovated historic Schoolhouse nestled in the native prairie at Big Sky Bison Ranch, a working regenerative bison operation in the peaceful, private Muddy Creek Valley. The 1,200-acre property is the perfect backdrop for relaxation. Bison, deer, antelope, trout, waterfowl, pheasants, coyotes, badgers, otters, beavers, and the occasional bear call it home. Catch-and-release fly fishing; private bison tours and other ranch experiences are available for an additional fee. The space Guests have access to the entire Schoolhouse, including a welcoming mudroom entry, a spacious private bathroom, private laundry, a fully equipped kitchen, and a cozy main living area. The Queen bed and sleeper sofa comfortably sleep two guests. Enjoy prairie views through large windows or step out the sliding glass door onto your private back deck—ideal for morning coffee, sunset views, and wildlife spotting. Outside, relax on the front deck, gas BBQ on the back deck, gather around the fire pit for s’mores or a beverage, and take advantage of private parking near the front entry door. No pets, especially dogs are permitted on Big Sky Bison Ranch. Dogs are perceived as wolves by bison and may elicit an exaggerated fight or flight response. To keep everyone safe and prevent bison stampeding or charging, no requests to bring pets onto Big Sky Bison Ranch will be approved. Guest access Big Sky Bison is an active working ranch, and access to the Schoolhouse begins at secured entry gates. The scenic driveway passes through our bison pastures and leads to the fenced farmyard where the Schoolhouse is located. For safety and security, the exterior gates are always kept locked. Access through the gates is available during working hours, from 8am to 5pm. If you plan to arrive or depart outside these hours, please coordinate in advance with the Ranch Caretaker, who will ensure you have reasonable access during your stay. This location is ideal for those who do not need to travel on and off the ranch, through the active bison pastures and locked gates multiple times during the day. Don’t forget your camera—there are incredible opportunities to photograph bison and other wildlife right from the property. Guests are welcome to enjoy self guided catch-and-release fly fishing, wildlife and bird viewing. Big Sky Bison Ranch is one of a just a few Audubon Certified Bison Ranches in North America. Please note: our bison are wild animals, not tame. For your safety, all guests must follow ranch rules and guidelines. As a working bison ranch we start early and our day typically ends at 5pm. The ranch gates are kept locked and access may be limited outside of regular working hours (8am–5pm) and after 9pm, so this may not be the ideal stay for those needing frequent access beyond those times.
