The Captain's Quarters
The Captain's Quarters
Description
The Captain’s Quarters is a charming two-story retreat on the Delaware Bay. Mornings begin with coffee at the cozy kitchen bar and evenings end with sunsets on the breezy sleeping porch. Two bedrooms promise restful nights. The first floor offers extra sleeping space, a full kitchen (tabletop oven upon request), and a walk-in shower. Spend your days fishing from the shore or strolling the beach at sunset—this bayside haven blends romance, family comfort, and the timeless rhythm of the tide. Other things to note Welcome to the Captain's Quarters in Fortescue, New Jersey! Built in 1926 by Captain Howard N. Clark, this classic four-square home reflects the rich maritime history of the Delaware Bay. Born in 1883, Clark began his career as an oysterman alongside his brothers in Port Norris, a town once booming from the oyster trade. By 1930, he transitioned to fishing, captaining the vessel Eagle and later guiding Audubon Society tours in search of Snow Geese. Life back then wasn’t easy—no plumbing, coal stoves for heat, and big changes happening in the world—but Howard built a good life by the bay. We’re glad to share his story and hope you enjoy your stay. Other things to note: - Pets allowed - No smoking - No events, parties, or large gatherings - It’s closest to the town of Millville which has many restaurants and grocery stores. - NOTE: As part of this natural habitat, it should be noted that in the summer months, the local wetlands are home to Greenhead flies, which can bite. Bug spray is recommended along with wearing light colors and/or long sleeves.
