Enter the common room from the pool lanai or front yard- it is a wonderful sitting area. Please keep in mind the entire second floor of the main house is off limits as this is our private residence. Other things to note The Big Island is filled with unspoiled nature. Every direction you go you will be rewarded with huge, dramatic views. The Big Island is still a farming island, with vast stretches of undeveloped raw land. It is quiet and peaceful during the day, dark and silent at night. (Please note that it is purposely kept dark to maintain excellent viewing conditions at the Mauna Kea observatories.) Visitors who are in search of solitude and nature will fall in love, those in search of a rockin’ nightlife or abundant shopping should try Oahu or Maui. Luana Inn is located in a tropical microclimate. We enjoy lots of sun and a moderate amount of rainfall which means lots of life. The main animals you’ll see on our property are beautiful birds and green geckoes. While we do our best to keep insects and lizards out of the rooms, and regularly spray pesticide around the perimeter of the houses, it’s nearly impossible to keep them out entirely. Most Hawaiian homes are built with airflow in mind rather than being completely sealed off from nature. If you have a phobia of insects or lizards, you may wish to consider staying in an upper room of a resort or hotel, because unfortunately we can’t guarantee that these critters won’t be sharing your room with you. In fact, green geckoes are so prevalent they’re called “house geckoes” here, and are considered to be good luck to have around, and bad luck to kill. Outside, you may encounter nocturnal geckoes, chameleons, mongoose, sphinx moths, bats, bufo frogs, and a huge variety of beautiful insects. You’ll also see many beautiful birds, including mynas, doves, cardinals, pheasants, saffron finches, francolins, lavender waxbills, Java sparrows, Japanese white eye (meijiro), pueo (the native Hawaiian owl), barn owl, and ‘io, the native hawk.
