WELCOME TO BUTTE LA ROSE, THE HEART OF THE ATCHAFALAYA BASIN: In the early 1930s when the Army Corps of Engineers carved two long levees right through the Atchafalaya River Basin, what had once been a widely sprawling river system prone to seasonal flooding became a fifteen-mile-wide "spillway" contained between those two earthen walls. The water level in the Basin rose by several feet, permanently flooding many areas, and people who had made their homes there eventually moved to communities on the dry, western side of the levee--Henderson, Catahoula, Bayou Benoit and beyond--leaving no trace of the old settlements behind. Only one community remained. Perched on a ridge along the banks of the Atchafalaya River, Butte La rose is the only community in St. Martin Parish that is still located between the Basin levees. No other place can claim to be the heart of Atchafalaya as credibly as Butte La Rose can. The community is nestled against one of the more winding meanderings of the Atchafalaya River, and residents remain closely tied to the river and other nearby waterways--fishing, crawfishing, frogging and hunting, enjoying bayou-side crawfish boils and pleasure boating. So many waterways surround Butte La Rose--Butte La Rose Canal, Henderson Lake, Lake Begneaux, Lake Pelba--it's as close to an island as you can get without actually being an island. The Atchafalaya Basin is the nations largest river swamp containing almost one million acres of America's most significant bottom land hardwood swamps, bayous and backwater lakes. Our location is in a camp style neighborhood with great neighbors, like you. Here you will get the rest and peace and quiet you may need or our location can provide all the fun that you can handle. If you need one night or one week or longer we can work with you. We live on the Atchafalaya River Hwy. and our location is only 3 miles from I10 at exit 121. Our Doucets grocery store, is one of the few remaining neighborhood stores in our country. The store has been here near 100 years and is two miles from our home. They have a large selection of groceries, a car wash, a laundromat and gasoline. Really handy for our somewhat remote location. Many hummingbirds visit here every year. They arrive approximately mid March and leave mid September. There are also many festivals in a close range or take a swamp tour. Our Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival and Lafayette's Festival International, Festival Acadian are famous and near by. Enjoy boudin, cracklings or crawfish. An abundance of Cajun food and Cajun restaurants are nearby. Take care and thank you for considering Kickin' it in the Butte. Local Attractions: Downtown Breaux Bridge Cypress Cove Landing McGee's Louisiana Swamp Tours, Atchafalaya Basin Landing Swamp Tours, Turtles Bar on the Levee, The Butte Bar, Pat's Fisherman's Wharf Restaurant and the Atchafalaya Club (cajun bands and dancing), Crawfish Town USA Restaurant and Market, Louisiana Marketshops at the 115 (arts, crafts, gifts) Other things to note Concerning booking our on-site RV, please no pets or smoking during your rental of our on-site RV. We do allow pets if you bring your own RV to rent our RV space and we allow pets in our guest room rental. Of course smoking is permitted outside.
