Historic, quirky Duck Creek Cottage in the Heart of Wellfleet. Located on Duck Creek, this independent cottage is cozy, private, and has two bedrooms and a full bath. It sleeps up to four adults or a small family. Rented for the 1st time in 2020. The space National Geographic magazine featured the view from the kitchen table as a photo centerfold in a 1975 article. The perspective has scarcely changed since then. Built by oyster man and author Earle Rich when he returned to Wellfleet after sailing the seven seas at the end of the Second World War, the house was inhabited for many years by his widow, the artist Florence Rich. In more recent decades, it has been home to writer and historian Evarts Cecil Erickson and artist and author Janet Doub Erickson and their family. The house exudes the charm of yesteryear, tastefully updated. While the bathroom was fully renovated in 2021, little else has changed. This is authentic Wellfleet as few see it. Earle wanted the house to feel like the boats he lived and worked in, and it does. Experience the daily tides and the sun and the stars over Duck Creek; watch blue herons and osprey fish. Swim in Duck Creek at high tide but watch out for oyster shells! Enjoy cool evenings in front of a crackling fire. Step out of the kitchen, walk ten feet from the door at high tide, and dip your toes in Duck Creek without leaving home. Dolphins and sunfish occasionally swim in front of the house; coyotes and foxes are not unknown to us, despite our location in the center of Wellfleet. Earle Rich built the cottage on the Creek to be cozy and warm in the winter and to feel like a fishing boat at high tide. Our brothers who are 6'3" fit nicely.
