Stunning ocean view condo in Waianae, HI On the westernmost part of Oahu (the Leeward side) is the Wai'anae Coast. It stretches 20 miles from the town of Nanakuli to Makaha. At the end of the island is the gorgeous Makua Beach. The Wai'anae Coast is about 30 miles from Honolulu. When driving take H-1 west to Wai'anae and exit onto Farrington Highway, the only road in and out of Wai'anae. You will pass the Disney and Marriot Resorts in Ko Olina, and quickly arrive where the local Hawaiians live. Wai'anae is not upscale. If you prefer a destination outside of the resort tourist bubble then it is a great location for you! Two pools on property. Direct beach front access. Two coin-operated laundry facilities on premises. We live on the mainland in California, so we are not there during your stay. The apartment is self-serve and best suited to the self-sufficient person. I am always available via phone or email before and throughout your stay. I am more than happy to answer questions and help with suggestions. Wai'anae is a lower income (by most US standards) neighborhood on the leeward coast of Oahu. The beauty of Wai'anae, and what I have come to really appreciate is the lack of tourism in the area, and the breathtaking beaches here. You can travel to Waikiki, or Honolulu and essentially feel like you never left the mainland. Swarms of tourists on the beach, and mass retail. Okay to visit, but I love that Wai'anae offers a more authentic experience of the island. You can talk to locals and patronize local establishments, getting a real feel for Hawaii. The beaches are among the best on the island. Ka'ena Point/Yokohama Bay are breathtaking and far less crowded. Makaha is world famous among surfers. There is a bus that runs up and down Farrington Hwy. While not essential, I HIGHLY recommend a car to save time and hassle. Also for day trips to North Shore, etc. Makaha Surfside Condominiums were built in 1974. There are 454 units. This is not a tourist, time share-type resort. There are mostly local Hawaiian families living here. Our unit is ocean front with a nice view of the Pacific. It is 412 square feet with two twin beds in the bedroom and a queen size pull out sofa bed in the living room (the pull out is not comfortable, but fine for a child). There is a window unit air conditioner, and a flat screen t.v. If you are looking for an authentic Hawaiian experience, away from mass tourism and beautiful, un-crowded beaches, Wai'anae is a fine choice. If you are a surfer, then you already know Makaha is paradise. Two pools on property. Direct beach front access. Two coin-operated laundry facilities on premises. Getting around 85-175 Farrington Highway and the Waianae area is relatively easy, offering a mix of transportation options to explore the beautiful surroundings and nearby attractions. 1. Car Rental: Renting a car is a convenient and popular option for getting around Oahu, including Waianae. It gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace and access various attractions, beaches, and hiking trails in the area. Several car rental companies operate on the island, and you can arrange for a vehicle pickup either at the airport or other convenient locations. 2. Taxis and Ridesharing: Taxis and ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft are available on Oahu, providing a convenient way to get around without worrying about parking or driving. Keep in mind that while these services are accessible, they might be more commonly found in urban areas closer to the city. 3. TheBus (Public Transportation): TheBus is Oahu's public transportation system, operated by the Oahu Transit Services. While it might take a bit more time than driving, it's an affordable option for getting around the island. Various routes connect Waianae with other parts of Oahu, including the city of Honolulu. Be sure to check the schedules and routes in advance. 4. Biking: Waianae's relatively slower pace and scenic routes make it a suitable area for biking. If you enjoy cycling, consider renting a bike and exploring the local area on two wheels. Just be cautious of traffic and follow local regulations for bike safety. 5. Walking: Depending on where you'd like to go, walking can be an enjoyable way to explore the immediate neighborhood and nearby beaches. Keep in mind that some attractions might be a bit farther away, so plan accordingly. 6. Tours and Excursions: If you're interested in guided experiences, there are tour operators that offer transportation as part of their packages. These tours can take you to popular attractions, cultural sites, and outdoor adventures while providing valuable insights from local guides. 7. Local Shuttles: Some local hotels, resorts, and attractions offer shuttle services for their guests, which can be a convenient way to access nearby amenities and points of interest. Remember that Waianae is located on the western coast of Oahu, and while it offers a more laid-back and less crowded atmosphere compared to the bustling city, transportation options might vary. It's a good idea to plan your transportation ahead of time based on your preferences and the places you want to visit during your stay. Full Discloser: The pullout couch is not super comfortable, but fine for children (or someone who doesn't mind). I love to sleep on it because of the view and the ocean sound. I just pile on blankets to make it comfortable.
