The space The Pu'uhonua House is a classic 2 story, 5 bedroom plantation house that once housed a Japanese sugar plantation workers' family of 9. The house is surrounded by breadfruit, mango, coconut trees, bamboo and "olena"--Hawaiian turmeric. Bathroom & kitchen are shared by 1-2 others. Comfortable living room with a diverse library & an old Japanese family ancestral altar. Pu'uhonua means "sanctuary," & this warm, gracious home is a "sanctuary," a reminder of the spirit & architecture of "Old Hawaii," when sugar was king,. Communities lived closer together & everyone shared what they had. This spirit of family, caring & sharing thrives here.
