Description

This modern farm house offers beautiful views of our bustling organic farm and the Kona coastline beyond. Nestled in a secluded banana grove, this private custom 2 bedroom/2 bath home boasts comfortable Cal King beds, fresh linens, vibrant plants, vintage island furnishings, a well-appointed kitchen, and welcoming outdoor living spaces. You can sample our organic farm produce in a welcome basket, as well as at nearby stores and restaurants a short walk away in Kealakekua village. The space This contemporary home built in Hawaii's traditional plantation style provides a central base to explore the dynamic Island of Hawaiʻi. Tucked away on a secluded corner of our family's vibrant 5-acre produce and coffee farm, guests enjoy a peaceful private farm stay just minutes away from Kealakekua village. The sunny open living area has bamboo flooring, modern rugs, and large windows that look out on banana forest, farm scape, and sweeping ocean views. Bright and well equipped kitchen and dining areas flow seamlessly with the peaceful living room and lounging area on the front lanai. The kitchen adjoins an outdoor living area with secluded yard and grilling area, surrounded by rustic tropical gardens. Bedroom 1 has a large walk-in closet and attached full bath, and bedroom 2 includes a modern work space, ample closet area, and adjacent full bath. Both bedrooms have comfortable California king beds, fresh linens, and large windows looking out on lush tropical private exterior spaces. To accommodate additional guests, the living room can be set up with a queen sofa bed, or arrangements can be made for a portable crib or two folding single futons. This peaceful restorative space lends itself well to contemplative practices, and yoga mats props are provided for your use. The quiet neighborhood of small farms also lends itself to hill walking and exploring. Nearby beaches offer stunning views and spectacular snorkeling. The house is well stocked with beach gear (towels, beach umbrella, beach blanket, chairs, cooler…). For ocean adventurers, body boards and snorkel gear are available as well. Your hosts produce vibrant organic vegetables and fruit for top island restaurants and local grocery stores. Guests are welcomed with a sampling of local farm bounty, and our produce is available at nearby restaurants and markets as well. While this quiet home enjoys its own secluded corner of the property, guests can also enjoy a birds-eye view as our beautifully-maintained farm bustles with planting and harvest activities, visits from local restaurateurs, and conservation and community efforts. Guest access Private off-street parking adjacent to the house accommodates up to 3 vehicles. Local shops and grocery store, restaurants, bars and other services are less than a mile away. The house is a half a mile from Kona’s main highway and is accessed by a paved one-lane private road that requires polite and careful driving, but requires no 4-wheel or all wheel drive. The short road to our farm is paved, but in the rainy season especially, there may be significant potholes or bumps. When you arrive at the farm, there is a short dirt/gravel driveway to your parking area. While there is no need for 4WD or AWD, we recommend avoiding rental cars with very low clearance. This will also help if you wish to visit more remote beaches or generally get off the beaten path. Other things to note Far from the sounds of traffic and commerce, guests are greeted in the morning by birdsong, wild chickens, and the stirrings of farm life. Sunset is heralded by the sound of birds returning to our nearby bamboo grove, and evenings often include a steady jungle chorus of chirping coqui frogs. You may hear the snuffling of local pigs as they wander past, and daytime brings its own opportunity to experience local farm life. Most weekday mornings, youʻll see our farm crew busy tending the fields and maintaining our orchards. The surrounding jungle and the bustle of the farm are part of what make a stay at Ola Mahina Gardens special. That said, the nighttime and morning noises of our jungle settling are different than home for most guests, and sensitive sleepers may wish to bring ear plugs or noise canceling headphones while you adjust to the sounds of our farm stay. A final note on island life on our organic farm--part of the wonder if this tropical setting is different flora and fauna of our islands. Depending on the season, you may have mangoes or avocados dropping from trees just outside your door (a blessing and sometimes a slippery hazard on the driveway). We try to keep up with harvest and clean up, and you are welcome to harvest fruit as you like. You are likely to be visited by an elderly neighborhood calico cat "Mama", and she loves affection, but we ask that she stay outside. You also may see our neighborhood wild pigs, mongoose, and a stunning array of smaller critters. We are blessed to have very few harmful insects and no snakes, so you can rest assured that few our local fauna can cause you harm. That said, this is the tropics and you are likely to see our brightly colored geckos and even the occasional bug can find their way inside. (They are actually locally called "house geckos" as islanders have long since made their peace with the tiny visitors.) Please let us know if you see any creature that concerns you, and we can at least identify, and mitigate if we can. As a certified organic farm, we use very minimal chemical pest controls, and try to address pests in other ways when we can. Keeping food put away and counters and sinks wiped clean helps us with this! The Hawaii State TAT # for this listing is TA-187 space 666 space 5856 space 01.
