Immerse yourself in the lush rainforest full of native birds, tropical flowers, and trees taller than most buildings! This is a peaceful retreat just 30 minutes from Volcanoes National Park. ~ The Space ~ The unique Sun Cottage provides accommodations for up to four people. Inside, you'll find a spacious and cozy home with a large dining/family room, a full kitchen with a gas stove and oven, and a large bathroom with a vanity and a classic clawfoot tub. The cottage features a fun loft bedroom with two single beds and a large master bedroom with a Queen bed, dresser, and Smart TV. Step outside to a fully covered front porch, a covered garage space, and a private outdoor shower for a full nature immersion! ~ Location & Climate ~ Community-maintained private paved roads make for an easy (if exciting!) drive. The cottage is located at an elevation of 1,500 feet, with daily temperatures typically between 65°F and 85°F. Total annual rainfall is approximately 160 inches, so you'll experience the true beauty of the rainforest. We provide a space heater for chilly evenings and fans for warmer days. ~ Important Notes for Your Stay ~ Eco-Living — Please be mindful that as an island, we have very limited resources. We ask that you use electricity and our catchment water sparingly. To help, please turn off lights and electronics when not in use. Water — The hot water heater is on-demand and takes a minute or so to heat up. We provide a Brita Pitcher for drinking water from the cold water kitchen sink as well as a city-treated water jug with an electric pump. Water from the bathroom sink, shower, and bathtub is non-potable. Plumbing — This is extremely important! Our home uses a cesspool. Please DO NOT flush anything but human waste down the toilet. This includes toilet paper and food scraps. A bidet attachment is provided for sanitation, and trash cans are available for all other waste. Stove Use — The gas stove is run on propane and should auto-lite, but a lighter is provided on the shelf above the stove should it be needed. ~ Privacy ~ I live on the property up to the left of the main driveway, but I am not visible from the Sun Cottage. Please note there is a second structure across from the cottage beyond some banyan trees, which is empty unless communicated differently before booking. Reach out with any questions. Mahalo! Guest access The front gate will left open and the cottage is accessible with a keypad lock. The door code will be provided within 24 hours of check-in. Please feel free to explore the area around the cottage and driveway from the gate, however, the driveway to my home and the building across from the cottage are both private and not accessible without prior permission. Other things to note Please keep in mind that the Sun Cottage is located in a rainforest. Things can get musty and humid. There are many screened, openable windows and fans throughout the house to keep the air flowing through during the wet, warmer months. There are also mosquitoes and other critters outside, like coqui frogs that chirp at night when it’s warm and wet. Bug spray and an electric bug swatter are provided.
