Other things to note E komo mai! We are so happy to host you and share how Hilo has stolen our hearts! Enjoy an authentic old Hawaii experience when you explore this special town. This is not your typical Hawaii vacation spot. Hilo is more locals and families and less of the manicured resort type of vacation. You will find rust and peeling paint on many buildings, see wild chickens and pigs around town, and hear the nightly serenade of the coqui frogs. Nature, hiking, waterfalls, beaches with lava rocks and cold fresh water springs, people fishing, outrigger canoes racing by are all part of what makes Hilo unique. The best way to experience everything that the Big Island has to offer is to stay on both sides a few nights. The Big Island is Huge! Do not under estimate the time it takes to drive places. Here is a great itinerary if you are spitting your time between the Kona side and Hilo side: leave Kona early, GET GAS FIRST, maybe pack a lunch, drive south from Kona explore some farms along the way, stop at South Point, Black sand beach… the drive from there to Volcano National Park is remote and exceptionally beautiful. The landscape is surprising and not something you would expect for Hawai'i. Head into VNP and ask the rangers what’s best to do that day for your group. There are great restaurants in the town of Volcano itself and even within the National park. Volcano house inside the park has been a favorite of our family and guests. From VNP it’s about a 45 minute drive to our home in Hilo. There are great restaurants and places to explore in Hilo if you make it to town early, but already this will have been a very full day. Things tend to close up fairly early and you will instantly feel that old Hawai'i vibe. We are close to saddle road so if you want to drive up to the visitor center for stargazing after dark it’s easy access. The next day take time to explore Hilo. There are lots of free adventures to be had! The Zoo, Mauna Loa mac nut farm, Mokupāpapa discovery center, Rainbow falls, Queen Lilioukalani gardens... that’s a full day of no cost adventuring! Other notable places to visit are Imiloa Astronomy center (open Wednesday-Sunday only), Akaka falls, honomu goat dairy(free), the botanical gardens on the scenic route just north of Hilo. Honestly 2 nights minimum would be your best bet to really explore Hilo side. There’s also the lava flow from 2018 to check out along with Pahoa town, Uncle Roberts night market in Kalapana on Wednesdays. Drive the Red Road, get fruit or a coconut from a road side stand (bring cash), tide pools, and the new black sand beach at Pohoiki. The day you leave Hilo, you have 2 options, drive north along the breath taking Hamakua coast (Botanical gardens and Akaka falls this way) or drive across the middle of the island on the saddle road in between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. The Hamakua coast will take you through many small towns and villages which are great places to pull off and explore. Have lunch in Waimea, then choose how you want to spend the rest of your day and drive back to Kona. Feel free to ask questions and share with us the kind of trip you are wanting to have and we will be happy to give you recommendations :) Hawai’i taxes you will see upon checkout 4.712% GET is the General Excise Tax, this is similar to sales tax in other states and may be labeled “Sales Tax” as Airbnb doesn’t have the option to label it correctly as “GET” 10.25% TAT is the Transient Accommodation Tax which is basically a state tax on tourism And the new tax implements in 2022 is 3% HCTAT- Hawai’i County Transient Accommodation Tax which is the county level tourist tax Registration Details GE 208399667201R TA-208-399-6672-01
