The ocean is less than a mile away as the crow flies, so depending on the surf conditions you may hear and/or see the crashing waves. Magic Sands (White Sands) beach is just 5 minutes (1.8 miles) away. A black sand snorkeling beach called Kahalu'u is only 6 minutes (2.5 miles) away. We often see sea turtles here. The shops and restaurants of downtown Kona are 10 minutes (4 miles) away. Multiple grocery stores are available to the north or south within a 10 minute drive, and there's a small convenience store just a block away. We're only a 20 minute (11 mile) drive from the airport. (Tip: if you have a Costco membership, stop there on your way to the house from the airport. You'll be driving right by!) Just three blocks to the wonderful Walua Trail, popular for walking, running and biking. Numerous coffee plantations are just up-mountain a bit. We're happy to give you our recommendations. My home is located in a traditional Hawaiian neighborhood, not a resort setting. You'll likely get to hear children playing, coqui frogs in the evening, perhaps a dog or a rooster on occasion. Live like a local! For almost any visit to a Hawaiian island, you will want to rent a car. Public transportation is not easy or convenient. There is off-street parking for one guest car at the house, on a paved driveway. Sometimes we rent the whole house.
