Captain Norton commandeered the whaling ship, Splendid. From 1839 through 1872, Splendid sailed from Martha's Vineyard a total of nine times. She was fourth in the top ten revenue producing Vineyard whaling ships of her time. The good Captain purchased the home for his sister's husband, Jeremiah Crowell who was a shoemaker and had a shop on Main Street. In 1843, he sold it to his nephews, Hiram and William Crowell, both mariners who lived in Eastville. The house eventually became the home of Jeremiah's third son, Benjamin, the local coal merchant.
