Description

Sunset Cottage & Beach is a quiet get away on the Delaware Bay in the small town of Fortescue, NJ. It is a modern cottage in an environment rich with the wonders of nature such as migrating Sanderlings,Red Knots,Ruddy Turnstones, who feast on Horseshoe Crab eggs. Willets,Oystercatchers,Skimmers, Ospreys and Bald Eagles plunge into the bay for fish. Diamondback Terrapin Turtles abound. Come Kayak,Paddle-board,Swim,Float,Hike,Fish,Crab,Play or just enjoy the deck, bay breezes and amazing sunsets The space Our space starts with a soft sand and grass front yard leading to a wooden stairway up to the ground floor of the cottage and wooden deck which surrounds the house and includes a very large deck space at the back of the cottage. Our cottage is the first bulk headed house on the Delaware Bay side of Fortescue, offering direct access to a beautiful and extensive public beach extending all the way to "Fishing Creek" inlet which services a public boat ramp, gas dock, the Fortescue Marina and Higbees boat ramp at the far end of the Marina. One side deck provides access to a private outdoor shower with hot and cold water. The other side deck provides a hose for rinsing your feet and the kayaks & paddle boards. The hose can be extended along the side deck to the back for the cleaning of crabs and fish, or for rinsing the back deck. Guest access Guest access is from the front of the property and there is ample free parking on the street along the side of the dunes. Other things to note Fortescue is a Bay community and like all Bay communities in the Northeast, and throughout Cape Cod it can experience a hatch of gnats, horse flies or strawberry flies at different times of the year (not all at once). Most all the time when a hatch takes place, the Bay breezes will keep them away, but if the breezes are light you might want to use an insect repellant. From about mid of May to mid June, you will see the amazing spectacle of horseshoe crabs who migrate 90 miles from the continental shelf to lay their eggs on the Delaware Bay beaches. During this time, they will come ashore for a couple hours during each high tide and then return to the bay. Migratory birds such as Sanderlings, Ruddy Turnstones and Redknots that fly all the way from South America to the Arctic rely on these eggs for their very survival on their long flight during which time they will lose 25% of their body weight. They can't survive this trip without these nutrient rich eggs. They can be seen on the beaches during this time eating the tiny green eggs that will give them the fuel they need to survive their arduous journey.
