Hilltown Hideaway Riverside Camp
Enjoy memorable, romantic days & nights in a tasteful platform bell tent in the woods of Western Mass. Set next to a babbling brook, surrounded by pines and hemlocks, with hiking & swimming nearby—and only 30 minutes from Northampton or Pittsfield/Lenox. Beautiful new bathhouse with composting toilet & HOT shower. Adirondack chairs for chilling & firepit for grilling. Unplug and re-wild yourselves! Rest, relax, rejuvenate, reconnect with nature. The space Set next to the convergence of a spring-fed stream and a small river where you can wade barefoot, and less than a mile from the Westfield River, the Hilltown Hideaway Riverside Camp is ideal for folks who want to enjoy the experience of camping amidst the beauty of the pristine woods and waters of Western Mass, yet still retain a few comforts, too. Sleeping can be the hardest thing about camping, so we have provided the bell tent with two new, incredibly comfortable and plush 10" foam twin beds (that can be placed next to each other to create a king sized bed if guests wish.) We provide sheets, pillowcases and two comforters, but HIGHLY RECOMMEND guests being their own SLEEPING BAGS, as it is a tent and it can get cold at night, even in the summer - there is no heat source inside the tent! We've decorated the interior with imported kilim wool rugs and pillows to keep you warm, and lit it all with outdoor solar and indoor battery-operated lighting. Outside, there are two comfy, locally made Adirondack chairs to sit and watch the river, a big picnic table, a supply of firewood, and a thick steel firepit that also doubles as a grill for cooking. Parking is just a few steps away in the open meadow above the campsite, or next to the camp via the low road next the the brook, if your car is small to average-sized (big pickups will have a hard time turning around.) We have provided a basic kitchen for our guests, with grilling utensils, camp coffeepot, cast iron fry pan, plus enamel cups, bowls, plates, knives, utensils, and cutting board. We also give guests a big container with four gallons of fresh drinking water, too. In short, we've tried to think of everything to make your experience as comfortable and relaxing as possible - you can even charge your devices at the outlet behind the bathhouse - but if you are the kind of camper who likes to bring your own gear, you are very welcome to bring it along and keep our gear stowed. Best of all, you have exclusive access to our brand new, off-grid bathhouse with composting toilet, sink, and an on-demand HOT shower! It's beautiful, made out of pine and cedar by a local craftsperson, and has been situated in a serene and private place less than a minute's walk / 150 feet from the tent. The composting toilet has instructions provided for those unfamiliar with their use. It's really easy and if used correctly, does not smell. ALL GUESTS MUST read and strictly follow the directions before use! Remember, if you are missing anything, we live right up the hill, so just ask us for help! THREE THINGS TO NOTE BEFORE YOU BOOK: 1) The camp does NOT have wifi, AND cell service is spotty. (AT&T works best, but most folks can get carrier access in the center of Chesterfield at the General Store.) 2) The campsite is set in the woods, and the Hilltowns are really considered quite rural as compared to most of Massachusetts, but you can hear road sounds/cars from across the river during the day; very few cars drive this road at night and it is generally very quiet. 3) There are TWO other properties on site: a small cabin that is over a football field away that we also rent on airbnb, and our own home, further away up at the very top of the driveway that leads into our property. Guests of the Camp will have the entire camp area and bathhouse to themselves - all other guests on our property will not be allowed to come into the camp or bathhouse, and as a host, I tend to leave guests alone unless they need help of course! Finally, please remember: it's a tent! A very big and nice tent, set on a platform--but it's still a tent in the woods and you will be *camping* and NOT in a hotel. It can get cold at night (thus, do bring a sleeping bag, good socks, and layers of clothing.) It can rain, any time of year. There will be bugs, too (we have provided bug spray, but do bring your own preferred brands.) This is camping with a bit of style, and most importantly, in privacy WITHOUT any other campers around you, AND in greater comfort, with most of the gear you'll needs, PLUS with the added bonus of a private hot shower and toilet - but it's still camping! Guest access Guests can roam anywhere on the property and along the river with the exception of the small guest cabin and bunkhouse that may be rented to other Airbnb guests. Otherwise enjoy woods, fields and waters! Dogs must be on leash at ALL times, and cannot roam freely alone - nor left alone in the tent - no exceptions. We have bears, coyotes, porcupines, and skunks here, and the last thing anyone wants is their dog to come into contact with those critters! Other things to note While we have pillows, sheets and comforter(s) on the beds, guests should bring sleeping bags and their own bath towels. The bathhouse is for tent guests only. Please, PLEASE, read the directions *carefully* on how to properly use the composting toilet, sink and shower. Please use the bathhouse as you would your own bathroom - with respect and care! Note: Failure to use the composting toilet correctly and mindfully, as directed by the camp guide we will send you before your arrival, and as posted inside the bathroom, too, may result in an additional penalty fee of up to $100 being assessed to negligent guests.
