The Yellowstone Cabin

The perfect getaway for two adventure-seeking, peace-loving souls. Nestled at the base of Tom Miner Basin, 15 minutes from Gardiner and YNP, the cabin offers privacy and impressive views of the Yellowstone River, Tom Miner Basin, & Paradise Valley. Reclaimed logs from a 1906 cabin and aged barn wood create a rustic ambiance with modern touches. The cabin is designed with local materials and worldly treasures to reflect the owner's love of travel and appreciation for local traditions & history. The space We welcome guests looking for a rustic, traditional Montana log cabin experience. This cabin offers all of that, along with enough modern amenities to make your holiday enjoyable and comfortable. We can provide reviews if you would like to see them. The cabin comprises a large open-plan lounge, dining room, kitchen, and full bathroom downstairs. A stone fireplace separates the kitchen and living room areas. In the upstairs loft, there is a cozy bedroom and a half bath. The living area is spacious with comfy couches, blankets, distinct sitting areas, and a flat-screen smart TV for relaxing at night. An office area in the corner has a desk, chair, lamp, and wifi that can be accessed throughout the cabin. The library shelves contain a range of novels, magazines, and books on Montana wildlife, nature, Yellowstone National Park, and other Southwest Montana outdoor adventures. A range of art is displayed on the walls, including the owner's photos (for sale on request) and art from around the world. Rugs cover the reclaimed wooden floors. A taste of Montana tradition is provided by taxidermied trout and elk antlers treated and mounted by the owner. There is a kitchen with all the amenities needed to cook and serve simple meals, including a gas oven and stovetop, microwave, hand mixer, food processor, various-sized baking dishes, basic cutlery, utensils, plateware, and a coffee maker. The island is a good space for cooking, and the wooden dining table faces floor-to-ceiling glass doors for views of Tom Miner Basin and Yankee Jim Canyon. The tile on the kitchen island, countertops, and backsplash are from Dolores, Hidalgo, Mexico. Behind the kitchen is a full bathroom with a claw-foot tub and rain-head shower. The stairs lead to a cozy loft that includes a bedroom with a king bed and a half bath. For relaxing evenings, you can use the gas grill and eat at the outdoor table, or sit in an Adirondack chair or on one of the swinging benches on the wooden porches. You can choose your view from the various decks and porches: out towards Tom Miner Basin, Dome Mountain, the Yellowstone River Valley, the Absaroka Mountains, or the Yellowstone River. More about the cabin: We do not have air conditioning, but we do have fans, screened doors and windows, and blinds on all our windows. You can use these technologies together to keep the cabin at a comfortable temperature. We provide information on how to do this if you are not familiar with it. While we have screens and pest mitigations and ensure the highest cleaning standards, you are in a log cabin in Montana, and every season, you may encounter odd critters or insects inside and out. Paying attention to the strategies we outline for managing these environmental conditions will make your stay more comfortable and relaxed. You may be looking for a different experience, like a higher-end hotel suite or housing. If so, we recommend you look for accommodations built in a more modern style with modern materials. If you want to stay in a comfortable log cabin in rural MT with basic modern amenities, we welcome you to our cabin in one of the most beautiful areas in the USA. Dogs We are a dog-friendly property and are delighted to welcome one dog per visit. This is contingent on receiving confirmation from our human guests that they have read and will adhere to the pet guidelines, and will actively support their pet in being a considerate/low-impact house guest. We charge a dog fee, as outlined in the cabin information. Note The shed at the top of the driveway, away from the cabin, belongs to the owner. They reserve the right to access it when needed and will be judicious in doing so. When possible, they will let you know before they access it. Guest access PLEASE NOTE: only 4WD or AWD vehicles are allowed up the short, steep driveway. 2WD vehicles need to be parked at the bottom, and guests must hike up the driveway. Update on access to YNP: There is now access to Yellowstone National Park (YNP) via the north gate on a much better road. While the Carbella bridge has yet to be rebuilt, access to the Park is still excellent from Tom Miner Basin. Without the bridge, there is an additional 12 minutes of driving to Gardiner on a scenic road where you can see pronghorn, mule deer, and possibly even big horn sheep. Time differences in driving to Livingston or Bozeman are negligible. The base of Tom Miner Basin (where our cabin is situated) is still closer to YNP north entrance than any accommodations in Emigrant or further north. Other things to note Heating The wood-burning stove is the primary heat source when the weather is cool. Montana summer evenings can be cool, and starting a real log fire can take the chill off. We provide firewood and a propane torch to start the fire. More detailed directions are in the guest book. There are baseboard heaters in each bathroom to keep them cozy. The gas fireplace under the stairs keeps the chill off in the morning until the wood-burning stove gets going. The gas fireplace under the stairs is supplementary, NOT the primary heat source. If you are uncomfortable using a wood-burning stove, this is not the place to rent when it can be chilly in the evenings (in Montana, that can be from September through early June). Dogs We are a dog-friendly property. We are delighted to welcome one dog per visit with a (pre-booking) guarantee from its human that they will support their pet in being a considerate/low-impact house guest. We ask for a $50 fee per visit, which we are happy to refund if we do not see evidence of dogs having been on the furniture or extra cleaning due to dog hair. (One of our guys sheds like crazy, so we understand this issue). We provide a vacuum cleaner, which you are welcome to use before you leave to eliminate excess dog hair. Extra Guests Depending on the circumstances and by special request, we may be able to accommodate a third person for an additional nightly rate. The only permanent bed in the cabin is a king bed. An extra person would need to sleep on an inflatable bed. While we can provide an inflatable bed and linens, we cannot guarantee comfort.
