Lodge Stewardship Award was given to us and our cottage. “Homeowners Charlie Schmidt and Nanci Lee are proud stewards of their circa 1945 Beach cottage in Pocomo. While they have been approached many times to sell to real estate developers, continuing the family tradition of Nantucket Summers in the rustic beach cottage is more important. Charlie’s parents rented on the island and purchased the property in 1976. A small addition in 1988 was the only major change to the house since it’s initial construction. When an additional bedroom was needed, the front porch was enclosed and cedar shingle sidewall painted white. Throughout the home original details are retained, like an old woodstove in the living room. Charlie an architect, and Nanci follow the old Nantucket tradition of salvaging building materials whenever possible. When new flooring was needed the couple sourced materials from a house that was being demolished. The family enjoys outer living on a mahogany deck that was salvaged from the demolition of a nearby cottage.A cozy in inviting summer retreat, Nanci and Charlie’s house is proof that bigger is not always better.” This is what vacations are about, simplicity, in an atmosphere of beauty and peace. This is truly paradise. The local gas man described our cottage as the "last of the Mohicans". The back guest room is quaint. An outside shower under a big tree makes showering and rinsing off the sand fun. Enjoy meals outside under an umbrella on our wood deck while looking out at the Pocomo bay. Approved pets are negotiable for a $200 fee. Bikes and kayaks can be rented. Please inquire. Two portable room heaters are available if needed. Guest access Private Pocomo beach. During your stay As much or little as guests want. Other things to note My place is one of the lowest priced around that allows one night stays and the Wauwinet hotel down the road charges minimum $2000 a night for one room. We are NOT A POSH STAY. It is more like a hostel/bohemian/communal surfer vibe. If you bring some fish home, I could very likely cook it up for all the guests. We are smack in the middle of nature and I do my best at keeping the bugs out but we are a beach cottage. No heat but wonderful breezes. Think Hawaii. ONLY low maintenance guests book, if you are high maintenance this is NOT THE STAY for you. Please book elsewhere. The only shower in the cottage is OUTSIDE. It's the best thing about the cottage. Rooms are tiny. We have deer rabbits, squirrels and birds and any other creatures on Nantucket. We do not have bed bugs. Bikes/Kayaks available for rent $40 a day, but use at your own risk. Let us know if there is anything you need! No shoes to be worn in the cottage and no smoking on or near the cottage. This is a quiet area with water views and a private beach access. Please enter the correct number of guests. There is an extra per guest fee of $100 for more than two guests. Check in is at 4pm and check out is at 10am.$40 additional fee for early check in or late check out. Please respect the check in times. You are welcome to leave your luggage at the house for free. To get to the private beach, walk to the neighbor's flag pole and turn right, walk down a small short path and take the stairs to the private beach. We are one step above camping. We are the traditional quintessential Nantucket beach experience. We are not a posh fancy place. Our rooms are tiny so minimal baggage please, otherwise do not complain about the storage as there are teeny closets. Think the old days. One bathroom. We do have locks on the inside of the rooms otherwise the rooms do not lock from the outside. Please inquire if you have any questions.
