Description

Kalapana Beach Haven is a very private splendid custom home, surrounded by nature and looking out over the ocean. It is graciously appointed, offering plenty of space without being overwhelmingly large. It's perfect for a peaceful retreat, a romantic sojourn, or for shared fun with a group of friends or family. The space Kalapana Beach Haven is a stunning 3 level custom-built tropical modern home that overlooks the ocean at the end of a cul-de-sac. With no direct neighbors, this retreat offers privacy with only the sounds of nature and the ocean. The house is surrounded on three sides by jungle with a path leading to the ocean a hundred yards away. The sounds of waves, wind, whales (occasionally) and the chirping of coqui frogs at night play nature’s symphony. Gentle breezes carry the scent of flowers through the house. And colorful Madagascar geckos preside over each room, controlling the insects. This house sits on an ancient site of the 'free house' in the area, used for sleeping as it was free from spirits. People consistently report sleeping incredibly well here. There are ruins of an old settlement in the jungle in front of the house. I designed and built the home with the thought of sharing good times with close friends and family. The center core is the heart of the home: a large wooden staircase. Long treads with low rises make the stairs easily accessed. On either side of the central core, the Great Room and bedrooms open and close, allowing them to communicate or offering privacy. Wooden louvers and awning windows allow air flow – especially at night when doors are closed to keep the bugs out. The textures of the wood and stone are sensual. The sandstone feels great underfoot and does not get hot in the sun so one can walk barefoot from tile, to floor, to the rugs that grace every room. I chose the materials for the house for their rich warmth, beauty, and durability. Tropical hardwoods, (Merbau, Teak and Tigerwood), Palimanan sandstone quarried in Bali, and natural slate. I co-designed all the doors and windows and almost all the furniture and had it made in Bali, where I also got many carved pieces and antiques. The Foyer at the entrance has a bench and shoe rack at the base of the stairs. The first level opens to a large deck. To the right is Library Bedroom and to the left the Great Room with a gourmet kitchen, living area and long dining table. French doors open onto the Main Deck. There’s a dining table for 6 with an umbrella and just outside the kitchen, a BBQ. There are additional chairs for larger groups. Each room has its own character and its own views. The doors and windows frame the nature outside and the vistas inside. The showers all have windows so you can look out while and see trees and the ocean even from inside. The upper level is home to what I call the “Captain’s Deck,” a smaller central deck sitting over the main deck. Floor to ceiling transparent sunshades have been added to the upper deck to keep the house cooler. When they are down, it’s like a screened room. To the right of the deck is the Queen Bedroom, with a four-poster bed and a soaking tub in the bathroom. To the right is the Master Suite with a King bed, a walk-through closet and a bathroom with double sinks and a walk-in shower. There is also a lounge area with a daybed and reclining chair for watching TV or reading. The upper bedrooms have large bifold windows that open the 10-foot expanses, and skylights that pour sunlight into the spaces. The lower level houses the Garden Room, and Covered Lanai. The lanai has slate floors and a large day bed perfect for reading and enjoying the privacy of the garden, with a stone Buddha watching over the house. To the right is the Garden Room with a queen-sized bed and a twin bed and half bath. It is often a favorite for younger people who can have their own space. Just outside is the rain shower – perfect for after the beach. There’s also a deck, a hot tub for 5-6 people and an umbrella for shade. It’s great at night for star gazing. I’ve left my art and books and other personal belongings from my travels throughout the house. It is not a museum, but a home that is meant to be enjoyed, shared, and respected. My goal for everyone to feel at home in my home, Kalapana Beach Haven. Guest access There are yoga mats and blocks, and an exercise ball. Some snorkeling gear is available. Beach towels are also provided. Other things to note Hawaii Taxes of 14.962% ARE included in the price. As of January 1, 2022 and additional 3% has been added by Hawaii County bringing the total to 17.962%. Additional Cleaning fees apply to parties larger than 4. Additional cleaning fees are also applied for holidays as our costs are higher. Rates are by occupancy. There is a base rate for 2 guests, then a $60 per person per night charge for additional guests. Light switches can be a bit confusing. The ones that get used most are marked. You may need to try them. The Stereo is a Bose Bluetooth unit. We recommend shopping in Hilo before coming down, though Pahoa has most of what you would need, and the corner store carries many basic items too. There is a clothes line that can be strung across the garden room for towels or laundry. Permit Numbers: STVR-19-364989, NUC-19-1724 Registration Details W01128150-01
