hope house
Sunny and open writing studio with over 150 years of literary history. Built in 1870, this lovely little house was where George Curtis edited Harper's magazine, wrote essays on transcendentalism , and argued for women's suffrage ( A recent guest informs me that George Curtis helped Thoreau build his cabin on Walden Pond ) The house has since sheltered painters, librarians, and poets. The space I have renovated the house to maximize light and space- avoiding clutter and letting the old fir floorboards speak for themselves . The eastern wall has floor to ceiling windows looking out over a private yard and garden. The main room is open floor plan with a cathedral ceiling. Two calm bedrooms (with doors) adjoin the main room. Guest access Except for the basement and barn, guests have the entire place to themselves. Driveway fits four cars. Other things to note Hope House is next door to Elmer's- one of the finest breakfast joints you will want to find. Cell service is spotty in town, so directions should be noted before arrivial . Anyone with an iphone can use wifi calling once in the house. There is also a land line.
