Cooke City is an isolated little town in the mountains where snowmobile riding is very popular between November and April each winter. Located right outside the north east entrance to Yellowstone National Park and surrounded by National Forests, this town is an ultimate retreat into nature; so much so that there is no cell phone service here. Cross country skiing and other winter activities, as well as photography, are also popular. The people are friendly and there's fun to be found in one of the bar/restaurants each night. There is also a neat historical museum at the Visitors Center. Sweet Pea Grocery and Gifts, and Stop the Car are two little shops worth stopping in on. Keep an eye out for some local artist galleries and crafters too! During the winter Cooke City is the dead end on highway 212, only road in Yellowstone National Park open at the time. Peak season is between June and September. If you travel to Cooke City outside of peak season be prepared for fewer restaurants and conveniences and/or shortened hours. Currently Winter Time: The only road into Cooke during the winter is through Yellowstone National Park (fees apply) from the entrance in Gardiner MT (Western entrance). It is also possible to trailer up snowmobiles, park at Pilot on highway 212 and ride in less than ten miles on snowmobiles to Cooke City (Eastern entrance). Permits are required for snowmobiles. Permits and more info can be obtained at the Exxon or Bearclaw Bob's. There are four consistent restaurants in town during winter, Wooka's Wild Eats, Cooke City Coffee, Miners Saloon and Prospectors. Wooka's has the best food. Everything you need is in town is with in walking distance. Summer Time: Everything you'll need can be found right off the Highway 212 and most places are with in walking distance. You can get to Cooke from east only right now by using Chief Joseph Highway. You can find ATVs to rent in town and drive out onto trails surrounding the tiny city. Horseback rides are also available nearby There are also neighboring cabins available to rent. Rusty Hinge Cabins 1 and 3. Exxon, Sinclair, Super 8 have ATMs. Cooke City is not a "city" with a lot of conveniences, it's a very small town with mostly only restaurants and hotels. Bring groceries from Cody or Red Lodge before arriving; if you plan to eat in. There are a few general stores that provide less-perishable items. Security Deposit is for incidentals and will be typically returned in full as long as everything is left in acceptable condition.
