Step back in time in this circa 1830 house furnished with period antiques and located on a private secluded lane on the D&R Canal in the historic Port Mercer region of Princeton. Ten minutes by car to Princeton University, Princeton Theological Seminary, Institute for Advanced Studies and the heart of Princeton. Easy access to shopping malls on Route 1. Enjoy day trips to historic Lambertville and New Hope. New York City and Philadelphia are easily accessible via regional rail and Amtrak. Enjoy nature walks along the D&R Canal towpath and Institute Woods or paddle down the canal (kayaks are available).Take a leisurely walk or bike ride following the route taken by General George Washington and his army to Princeton Battlefield State Park where the Continental Army engaged the British in the decisive Battle of Princeton in 1777. Enjoy a cup of tea or glass of wine on the covered front porch. The house was built in two phases. The original house was built circa 1830 to house canal workers. A wing was added later to the rear of the house which is now the private living quarters of the homeowners. (See Floor Plan). Guests stay in the original 1830 house and have exclusive use of the original parlor and dining room on the first floor, and two bedrooms and a full bathroom on the second floor. The 1830 house does not have a kitchen. A custom built butler's pantry in the dining room has a sink, refrigerator, microwave oven, toaster, electric kettle and french press coffee maker. Coffee, tea, filtered water and condiments are stocked in the butler's pantry. Grocery items can be purchased at Wegmans, Shop Rite, Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. All are located on Route 1 and are only minutes from the house. For guests with electric cars, a 50 amp level 2 'Juice Box' charging station is available for complimentary charging. The 1830 Canal House guest suite is completely private with its own entrance. The homeowners live in the 20th century wing at the rear of the house and can be reached through Airbnb, or by text or phone if you have any questions or concerns. The dominant feature of the neighborhood is the D&R Canal which was one of America's busiest canal routes, transporting coal and other goods from Pennsylvania to New York City. The historic village known as Port Mercer was named after the Revolutionary War hero, General Hugh Mercer, who was killed at the Battle of Princeton. Port Mercer was an important commercial stop connecting the nearby settlements of Clarksville and Stony Brook. By 1900, Port Mercer was home to a saw mill, lime kiln, a general store, and a hotel. Today, all that remains of Port Mercer is the Bridge-tenders house (now a museum), and a few of the original homes that housed workers who provided services for the canal traffic. The D&R Canal is now a state park and a popular recreational corridor for canoeing, kayaking, jogging, hiking, bicycling, fishing, horseback riding and birding. The canal and park are part of the National Recreation Trail System and is a valuable wildlife corridor, connecting fields and forests. Trenton Transit Center is less than 15 minutes by car and is serviced by Amtrak, New Jersey Transit for travel to New York City. and SEPTA Regional Rail to Philadelphia. New Jersey Transit trains can also be taken from Hamilton Station (12 minutes by car) and Princeton Junction Station (8 minutes by car). Parking at Princeton Junction is limited. Ample parking is available at both Hamilton Station and Trenton Transit Center. Uber is always an option for getting around Princeton. Guests should take note that the bedrooms are located on the second floor and accessed using the original staircase. The staircase, with a rope bannister, is steep, narrow and winding and is typical of 18th and early 19th century houses. The staircase leads to the small twin bedroom. Access to the bath and master bedroom is through this bedroom. Guests should also take note of the low (7') ceiling height on the second floor. The Guest Suite is not suitable for children. The homeowners have several pets, but they are excluded from the Guest Suite.
