Frequently Asked Questions-Our Home on Cape Cod or What We Have Learned Over Time • Favorite beaches for swimming/relaxing/fishing (all free after 4:30 and free 24/7 in off season) – there are lots more all along the coast – explore – but these are some of our favorites. There are beach chairs, umbrellas, beach toys, skimmer and boogey boards in the garage for you to use when you travel to beaches. Long Pond – at our house – no need to drive anywhere - walk about 100 yards from our house to the stairs on the left and walk down to the largest freshwater pond on Cape Cod. There are chairs and a sit upon tethered floating dock for your enjoyment-great sunsets. (People on our small road often access the pond via the stairs, but the beach area is ours.) The water is really high this year, and our little beach has gotten pretty little. Blow up rafts and tubes are in the garage for every age. Swim, canoe, (two canoes tethered at the pond) or kayak (2 kid tethered at the Pond and 2 adult behind garage) on this wonderful pond. There are TEVAS and water slippers in the garage – or bring your own. Small stones and rocks wash into the area. If you have a small motorboat that needs to be moored, we have a mooring. Email us to discuss using the mooring. Long Pond large sandy public beach - .5 mile from house either direction – life guard - canoe or kayak or bike or walk to it for free or get beach permit from Village of Harwich Community Center to park or drop off kids/adult and jog/walk back. Bank St Beach – a Harwich public beach – 15 minute drive – on Nantucket Sound – calm - get beach permit from Village of Harwich Community Center – has food cart, life guard, large sandy area and bring a beach chair. You can find out about all the Harwich beaches here. https://www.harwich-ma.gov/beaches Pleasant Bay – 10 minute drive – ocean- calm – swim at high tide – kayak – no fee- park in lot or along road in designated area Nauset Beach – 20 minute drive/Orleans-exit 12 on Hwy 6– ocean – boogy board mid-tide – walk & play low tide – daily fee is good for Nauset Beach & Skaket Beach on same day – has food carts – changing room/shower. Licenses can be purchased for adults at the hardware store in Brewster. Children do not need a license. You will need a permit for clamming – there are clamming shovels in the garage. • Whale watching & seal tours – tours are available from Hyannis or Provincetown for whales – we go to Provincetown and take the Dolphin Fleet https://whalewatch.com/ and we take the Monomoy Island Ferry from nearby Chatham to see the thousands of seals that have migrated to Cape waters from Canada and Maine www.monomoyislandferry.com • Top attractions – best attractions are exploring the waterways and unique coastal landscape. Unlike a city vacation, it’s the spit of sand called Cape Cod that is the top attraction. The Cape Cod National Seashore Center https://www.nps.gov/caco/index.htm in Eastham offers terrific kid friendly activities- check out their posting. There is a bike trail down to Coast Guard Beach (bike rental nearby off Route 6) for a fun day at the beach. Pack a lunch in a cooler from the garage, the boogie boards and sand toys and go to any of the beaches. It is a bit of a drive but there is a kid friendly farm, Coonamessett Farm in Falmouth. You can collect your own eggs from the nestling chickens or pick farm produce from the fields. Each town has it’s own Farmers Market. We love Chatham Market on Route 28 & George Ryder Rd. on Tuesday afternoon and Orleans on 6A Saturday morning. Check out the website for more information at http://ediblecapecod.ediblecommunities.com/shop/cape-cod-farmers-markets Missed the market? Check out Capeabilities’ Farm Stand on 6A in Dennis for organic produce and local gifts. Google mini- golf – there are a plethora on the Cape. One is nearby on Underpass Road. Next to Arnold’s on Route 6 there is a one to while away the time until your table is ready. Heading toward Yarmouth on Route 28, there is Pirates Cove and many more. Our kids have gone to Cape Cod Inflatable Park near Yarmouth on a cloudy day. Or there are go-karts, trampolines, batting cages and bumper boats along route 28 in Harwichport. Check out the website for Hokum Rock in Dennis for blueberry picking – usually in July and August. Harwich has a wonderful new kids’ playground in the park on Oak Street next to the basketball, tennis and pickle ball courts. The Cape Cod Rail Trail runs between the high school and the park. • Efficient routes to go to Martha's Vineyard/Nantucket You can avoid the traffic in Hyannis and catch the high-speed ferry to Nantucket in Harwichport – 15 minutes from house. https://www.nantucketislandferry.com/ On Nantucket you can rent bikes to take advantage of the bike trails or a jeep to head out to the outer beaches. Often folks ride to one of the beaches and stop at Cisco Brewers with its food carts to eat lunch. To get to Martha’s Vineyard, you can drive to Hyannis or Woods Hole to get the Steamship Authority or Hyline. We generally go to Woods Hole because it is a shorter boat trip but longer car ride. If you book in advance, you can take your car to Martha’s Vineyard. There are also buses on the Vineyard. • Kid friendly and adult activities (in the event of rain) Art – at the house there are lots of books, kids games and crayons to occupy children. You can collect shells at the beach and create an art project. There are lots of art galleries in Wellfleet, Brewster, Chatham and Orleans and the public libraries often have kids’ activities and play spaces. The Brook Street Library in Harwich Center has a fun children’s room and story time. Check out library websites for Brewster and Orleans, too. The Edward Gorey House in Yarmouthport has many of his original drawings. Museums – The NPS Cape Cod National Seashore Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham is free and has a free and fun museum with critters to touch and movies to watch on the history of Cape Cod. The Cape Cod Natural History Museum on 6A in Brewster charges a fee and has a wonderful small aquarium with local critters to look at and touch, a playroom, children’s activities and a wonderful walk through the woods down to Cape Cod Bay. The Audubon Reserve in South Wellfleet has a hands=on museum and wonderful forested walk to Cape Cod Bay. The John F. Kennedy Museum in Hyannis offers a visual walk through that family’s history. Movies – The historic Cape Cinema in Dennis and the newly renovated Orpheum in Chatham show first run and independent movies. Plus there are the movie theaters in Dennis at Patriot Square. The Cape Cod Rep in Brewster https://caperep.org/ has kids’ shows each week and fabulous adult shows at night. There is even a drive in movie on Route 6 between Eastham and Wellfleet – take your beach chairs and repellent and popcorn for an old fashion experience. An adjacent playground entertains until dusk when the movies begin. At the House you will find jigsaw puzzles, games, a pool table, ping pong table, DVDs and Netflix/HBO/movies to entertain in the event of rain. • Fun shops or areas to spend time Provincetown If you take a whale watching trip out of Provincetown, you can spend the rest of the day at Race Point or Herring Point Beach, bike through the NPS Cape Cod National Seashore -Provincelands or walk up Commercial Street in Provincetown for people watching, shopping and dinner. You can rent bikes with trailers or seats in Provincetown. Art’s Dune Tours can take you on a ride up into the large sand dunes that flank the Atlantic Ocean. There is a trolley in Ptown that offers a thirty minute narrated ride through this historic Portuguese fishing village, writers’ enclave and haven for the gay and lesbian community. Chatham This is a small town about fifteen minutes from the house. Little shops, an old-fashioned variety store and your local t-shirt shops line Main Street. There is a lighthouse at the end of Main Street and small beach to walk on especially at low tide. Wellfleet This is a small town with fun toy store, places to eat at the harbor (Mac’s Seafood) and watch boats and lots of art galleries. Orleans has a great Farmer’s Market and Art Shacks each Saturday morning, and sometimes-on Wednesday mornings. Farmer’s Markets abound in each town – Harwich Thursday and Chatham Tuesday. Art and craft shows – Check the Cape Cod Times for a list – there is almost always one on weekends. Cape Cod Baseball League – Each town has its own field and team made up of premier college athletes. They have day camps for kids and afternoon and night games. Fun activity that is either free or a donation. A summer tradition not to be missed. www.capecodbaseball.org/ • Running trails/paths (with a stroller) The Cape Cod Rail Trail is 22 mile minimal grade, blacktop trail that can be reached minutes from our house. You can bike to the Pleasant Lake General Store and hop on the trail, park at Headwaters off Rt 124 or if you are renting a bike, park at the Brewster Bike Shop. https://www.mass.gov/locations/cape-cod-rail-trail Check out the website above. Running from our home without a stroller, head up the gravel road, turn left at the mailboxes, continue on Great Woods Rd, turn left onto Long Pond Drive, turn left onto Cahoon Road, turn left onto Old Long Pond Rd and turn left onto Hamilton Cartway for a three mile run there and back.
