History of our home… In October of 2005 a man named Robert Johnson petitioned the City of Dubuque to move a ranch style home from Stewart Street to this space on Arlington Street. The city was adding a roundabout to University Ave and in their proposed plan the house would have been torn down. Robert proposed that he would have the structure moved to this site, and the preserved structure would become the main floor of the Arlington Cottage. The Arlington Cottage now sits in the Historic 11th Street District. The West 11th Street Historic District has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2004. It is a residential area on the top of a bluff overlooking the Jackson Park Historic District. The name of the district comes from the fact that there used to be a West 11th Street Elevator, a funicular elevator similar to the Fenelon Place Elevator. The Fenelon Place Elevator is still functioning and is a great activity to do while visiting Dubuque. The Arlington Cottage is with-in walking distance of Loras College. Loras is a private, Catholic college with an enrollment of approximately 1,600 students. It is the oldest post-secondary institution in Iowa. It was established in 1839 and was also added to the Historical register in 2020.
