Our unit has three ceiling fans (two inside and one outside). Enjoy Hawaii's famous warm days and comfortable nights courtesy of the Hawaiian trade-winds. You'll enjoy keeping our large Hawaiian louver windows and doors (all with screens) open for comfortable ventilation. Restaurants, grocery and entertainment options are limited and require driving between 10 and 30 minutes or more. If you are looking for an authentic Hawaiian experience, we are your spot. If you are looking for a big nightlife or multiple dining options, we may not be a good fit for you. There are two small towns nearby - Naalehu and Pahala. Each has a few tourist attractions (Ka'u Coffee Mill, Punaluu Bakery for example) and Naalehu has daily meal options for lunch and early dinners (many locations close by 5 or 6). Two grocery stores are found in Ocean View - about 30 minutes. Multiple dining options are avaialbe in Volcano National Park and Volcano Village. We'll email you a link to our visitor info PDF with lots of helpful details for your visit. We are the closest (only) resort style community condos to Volcanoes National Park. Drive from our beachfront location to the higher elevation park entrance in about 30 minutes. You will find the real Hawaii here....because you will be in the real Hawaii! We'll email you with details and access instructions for your stay plus a PDF with check in / check out instructions. We are available to our guests by phone, text or email at any time. If there is something urgent, and you can't reach us, we have a local contact on the Island. We have been part of the Airbnb community for many years and believe that good communication before, during and after your trip is essential to a good experience. Don't hesitate to contact us. Two small towns are within 10 minutes in each direction. Naalehu has several restaurants (one of our favorites is Hana Hou) and the famous Punaluu Bakery (a must stop!), a hardware store, Shaka's bar (southernmost bar in the USA), post office and twice-weekly farmer's market. Pahala has a small grocery store - the Superette and a Long's drugstore. There's a hospital in Pahala and both locations have gas stations and a few other local businesses to explore. The big agricultural attractions in the area are coffee and macadamia nuts; you'll see the farm lands all around. There are some local farms who offer tours and several coffee growers who offer tastings and direct from grower sales. South Point (Ka Lae) and the Green Sand Beach (it really is green!) are located within about a half hour drive. Every visitor to Hawaii Island will want to see the world's most active volcano - Kilauea - in Volcano National Park. The condo is located 30 minutes from the park entrance and is the only location so close to the park that offers our resort setting and guest amenities. Your park admission is good for 7 days. There is no city here. It's why we love it. We were so surprised to find the slice of real Hawaii that still exists. There is not a lot here - unless one counts peace, quiet, dark sky-filled nights, friendly people and their history as "things". Then, in that case, Ka'u is overflowing with Hawaii's real bounty. It's necessary to have a car. This is a rural area in the heart of Volcano, Coffee and Macadamia Nut country. It is a great location for exploring the rest of the island. You can fly into either Kona or Hilo (Hilo is one hour, Kona about 90 minutes). There is essentially no public transportation (one bus, one time a day...) If you are looking for a big night-life...you will not find it here. We're not located in a city and the two nearby small towns are just as quiet - day or night. There are three restaurant options in Naalehu (10 minutes away) and a limited grocery store at the 76 Gas Station. Two full size grocery stores are available in Ocean View (30 minutes) plus a few more dining options. Additional dining is available in both Volcano Village or Volcanoes National Park (30 minutes). Some places will close earlier than you might expect on the mainland or are cash only. The pace of life in rural Hawaii is slow, quiet and perfect...for relaxation, exploration and the recharge you are looking for. Take time to sit and watch the sea breeze blow the palm trees in the tradewinds and be awed by the stars in the blackness of the night sky. Kailua-Kona is an hour and thirty minute drive; Hilo is an hour away - that's each way. So, we suggest buying your groceries and other needs when you arrive in either airport. There is no air conditioning - our condo has three ceiling fans (two inside - living room and bedroom, one on the lanai) and generous ventilation with louvered windows for the famous trade winds. A blanket is provided, along with some extra pillows, should you want or need them. The kitchen is equipped for any length stay. As a ground floor end unit, the location is private (only two other condo entrances share our lanai area) and has tropical plantings on the end garden. On the rare days when you would want to eat inside there is a built in island with two stools. You'll find two beach chairs, snorkel gear and a cooler in the upstairs closet. We also have two beach towels for you to use if you wish. We provide starter paper products, trash bags, dish soap, hand soap and similar basic items for your stay. Our condo complex does not allow pets. Service animals, as defined under the Americans With Disabilities Act, are permitted. Emotional Support Animals are not recognized by the ADA and are not permitted by HOA complex policy. If you travel with a qualified service animal, we please ask you to note it's presence on your parking form at check in so our on-site manager is aware of your partner's presence on the grounds.
