Lalo—Nani O Kohala
Meaning "below" in Hawaiian, Lalo is the downstairs studio apartment in a converted barn on a small farm set on 5 acres tucked away in trees and shrubs about a mile from the town of Hawi (pronounced Ha-vee). With two entrances, Lalo is "ADA friendly." One access leads to the pool, available on request. It's quiet and secluded. Citrus, macadamia and starfruit in season, papaya, and chickens. No roosters on property! We like our quiet. Lalo and the upstairs studio, Luna, share a laundry room with the caretaker's cottage, also on property. Beach chairs, umbrellas and a cooler are available for outings. Lalo has easy access to outside, with a covered area on the makai (ocean) side. TV with wifi for streaming. A really comfy sofa bed, as well as the queen bed in its nook. A perfect setting for contemplation and reading, or a calm place to return after a day on the beach, or down the trails at Pololu. My policy is to be on property and available to guests as much as possible, especially for settling in and access to the pool, which is covered when not in use. Hawi is an old plantation town now famous for being the Ironman Triathlon turnaround. King Kamehameha was born locally. Hawai'i's oldest heiau or temple is on the coast a few miles from the house. Kohala is proud of its history and a sense of timeless as it's situated off the ring road. There's a couple of good restaurants in town. And even more kinesthetic experiences to be had with BIG Skydiving, Flumin' the Ditch, and Zipline. The Kohala Coffee Mill in downtown Hawi is world class. The best fish shop is 30 minutes away in Kawaihae; you can't get fish much fresher. Buses are available in town, but it's best to rent a car for getting around, especially from the airport and to all the sites of interest. Hawi leads to the last point of interest on Akoni Pule Hiway, at Pololu Valley; or the beautifully scenic Kohala Mountain Road leading to Waimea; or down the coast highway into more leeward country and the beaches of Hapuna and Kauna'oa accessed through the resorts.
