Kalarama Cottage is a newly renovated space in the middle of nature! Make yourself right at home in this quiet, private and peaceful location. The cottage is overlooking a beautiful forested mountain range, with easy access to hiking, biking, and cross-country ski trails right out the door. Kalarama is bright and sunny with stunning views. Come to unwind, enjoy nature, read, meditate or just work remotely from our 23 acre property! The space Kalarama (means “beautiful view” in Greek) Cottage is a 1200 sq feet of space. The property was previously run as an Apple Orchard, from 1940-1960. It is situated on 23 acres of private land abbutting the 300 acre Trustees of Reservation- Mountain Meadow Reserve and borders southern VT. The cottage has a full kitchen, bathroom, dining space, living area, bedroom, finished basement and outdoor seating/dining area. Enjoy the many wooded trails out the back door with trails maps located in the welcome binder. The owner of the property is a botanist & artist. Enjoy his abstract paintings, sculptures and plants throughout the space. He is also available for pre- scheduled tours of the property, of Mountain Meadow reserve and conversations about his art if you are interested! Bedroom & Bathroom Wake up to the incredible mountain view, the owner's unique megalithic sculpture and flower field through the large bay window. (There are blackout shades as well). The bathroom has a tub and shower with eco-friendly shampoo, conditioner, soap and bodywash provided. Finished Basement The basement has a beautiful view of the back deck and field. It has a pull out couch for an additional 2 people, a half bath, tv, internet and direct access to the back yard, trails, sculpture and outdoor living space. Kitchen, Dining & Living Space The kitchen is fully equipped with major appliances and necessary cooking tools. We also provide local eggs, cream and fair trade coffee for our guests as well. The dining space is separate with a large farm style table with four chairs. The living room has a comfortable and inviting couch, a smart tv with access to Netflix, Hulu and other streaming devices. This space also has a large window to experience the beautiful view. There have been countless sightings of an assortment of wildlife - birds (blue birds, buntings, bald eagles, cardinals, finches, oriols, woodpeckers, etc), bob cats, bears, coyotes, deer, mountain lions & the ever elusive resident house cat. Deck & Yard Space Outside, there is a large 600 sq foot deck with tables, chairs, small grill, fire pit and an umbrella for cottage guests, a perfect space for yoga, meditation, enjoying your coffee or working remotely. During the summer, the owner mows a path through the lawn and the wildflower field for a pleasant stroll by the megalithic sculpture. You can access the many hiking trails right out the front & back door by going up the “Teepee Trail”. Find the laminated trail map in the welcome binder for more details! Vintage Art Rock Posters "Complementing the posters, are several ethnomusicological instruments honoring Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, drummers of The Grateful Dead, for their contributions to music and humanity.” Location Kalarama is situated in Williamstown, MA in Berkshire County up a 4/10th mile, private well-maintained dirt driveway on the side of a mountain. The driveway is also a great place for a walk! The center of town is about a 5-8 minute drive where you will find restaurants, cafes, health food grocery store, farmers markets, shops and of course, museums and Williams College. Woods & Trails The "Teepee Trail" (previously known as "Cottage Trail") provides a short walk through the owners nine large (20-30') Teepees. Constructed with the help of his Grandsons, to give Thanks to each of the Indigenous Peoples he worked with while undertaking his Botanical expeditions in South America and South East Asia. The Mountain Meadow Reserve is a network of trails and the meadow itself is one of the most beautiful wildflower fields and vistas in Berkshire County. Guest access Guests will have access to Kalarama Cottage, its surrounding yard and the Trustees of Reservation trails. Kalarama Cottage is a private building with private parking across the driveway from the owner's home. The owner most likely will be present but he respects his guests privacy and is available for any type of emergency or question. You may occasionally see him riding his tractor or his 6 wheeler in the reserve as he helps caretake the Mountain Meadow property and volunteers for the Trustees of Reservation. The Kalarama property is embedded within Trustees of Reservation- Mt. Meadow. Local partnerships We have several connections to massage therapists and yoga/meditation instructors in the area. If you are looking for a private service during your stay, please let me know during the booking process and I will provide you with their details to reach out directly. We do recommend booking in advance to ensure they are available. There is nothing like a massage on the deck or a private yoga session in the grass! Eco-Friendly & Sustainability commitment The owner and his family are very dedicated to eco-friendly practices. We only use & supply all natural cleaning products throughout the cottage. All bathroom products available are also all natural and cruelty free. Any paper products are sustainably sourced via bamboo. While we realize that this is not everyone's vision, this is a value that we like to share. We also provide a compost bin and compostable bags if you would like to participate. There are details regarding composting in our welcome binder upon arrival. We do not spray our grounds with any bug spray, so please bring bug/tick spray if you are planning to spend time outside. Guest access We have FREE ample parking available. Other things to note Other things to note: ** Sorry, no pets and No smoking ** Coffee & tea: We supply both a coffee pot and a french press. We have an assortment of teas available and replenish our coffee after each guest. We get our local fair trade coffee from Deans Beans, out of Orange, MA. Pantry: We stock the house with salt, pepper, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, flour and sugar. There are several staple spices, seasonings, and condiments on hand as well. LGBTQIA+ friendly.
