Other things to note Neighborhood Sainte Alvere is famous for its winter truffle market and its summer farmer's and night markets where you can discover the various gourmet products of the Périgord. All the villages in the neighbourhood organize these renowned night markets complete with friendly atmosphere and musical entertainment held from the end of June to the beginning of September. They are great places to meet the farmers, breeders and craftsmen of the region where you can buy duck rillettes from a local breeder with Périgord-style cheese, purchased directly from the local farmer. Bring your own cutlery and try different local dishes like foie gras, dusck rillette and off course the famous truffle at the communal table where the locals welcome you and your family to the area. Take a day trip and visit several of the 162 most beautiful villages (les plus beaux villages) of France including Limieul, Beynac-et-Cazenac, Belves, Monpazier that are all close by. Walk through 1 of the ‘1001’ beautiful old castles in the surrounding areas like the Chateau de Campagne, the Chateau de La Rue, Chateau of the Gaubertie and the famous Château de Hautefort that looks like something straight out of a fairy tale and was even used as a filming location for the classic Cinderella story in “Ever After”. Bring along your golf clubs with five high end golf courses within 25kms of the house offering stunning courses for all skill levels including – Golf Blue Green the Marterie, Golf Originel du Sorbier, Golf Du Chateau Les Merles and even a course for the little ones at Jungle miniature Golf. With its calm and clear waters ideal for canoeing, kayaking and loads of activities, the Dordogne River will leave even the most "ground-loving" people with a smile offering many first-class sights along its 130 mile long shoreline framed with walnut orchards, rock-sculpted villages, fields of sunflowers, eye-popping views and stone fortresses that patrol the cliffs above. For guests that like to explore the region by bike, they can hire a bike via aquitaine bike a great service that will bring and collect the bikes for free directly at the house. Guests can even go horse riding through the country side with all experience levels catered for. On a warm summer’s day, take a dip in one of the several aquaparks (Aquatic lagoon, Etangs du Bos or Jacqou Park) or at one of the river beaches in Limieul which is regarded as one of the “most beautiful villages in France.” Laying at the confluence of the Vezere and Dordogne Rivers, Limeuil is home to a fantastic sandy river beach. Being shallow at the edge, the beach is a great choice for families with young children. If you can manage to drag yourself away from this beautiful beach, wandering around the cobbled streets of this postcard-perfect village, past honey-coloured houses and perfectly-manicured gardens, is definitely worth a visit. Hungry? Treat your taste buds around dinner time with many renowned bistro-bars that are only a few kilometres away. Some favorites in the area: In Paunat, you will find the small restaurant 'Chez Julien' next to one of the most charming churches of Dordogne. In Tremolat, you could go to the castle and inn 'Le Vieux Logis' and to its bistro-bar, the 'Château des Merles'. Or stay closer to home in Ste Alvere and dine out at La Laterne an elegant family friendly pizza restaurant with al fresco dining or Le P’tit Factory, a great lunch spot. Our pick is the award winning restaurant Dix (that was awarded a place in Gault & Millau’s Sélection 109 - a guide to the best new chefs and restaurants in France) where you can sit out on the terrace and eat some of the best seasonal food in the region surrounded by beautiful cobblestone streets and the charming village atmosphere. You can also book a private chef for a private dining experience at the house where you can enjoy the local specialties with the great wines from the region served inside or out under the terrace.
