Description

‘Joy’ is a peaceful single room, ideal for solo travelers exploring London. Located in the Grade II listed Old Courthouse, the Lotus Guesthouse is part of Jamyang Buddhist Centre — a calm refuge in the city. Named after one of Buddhism’s four immeasurable qualities, this room offers a simple, mindful stay. Guests are welcome to join our daily activities and experience Tibetan monastic life first‑hand. The space Jamyang Buddhist Centre provides a place for contemplation, study and practice of Tibetan Buddhism in the Mahayana tradition following the lineage of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The Lotus Guesthouse is adjoined to our vibrant Buddhist Centre, with a library, 2 temples, a garden and a dining and co-working space. As our guesthouse is part of Jamyang Buddhist Centre, we ask that all of our guests kindly follow the 5 Buddhist precepts or guides for harmonious living. - To refrain from causing harm, and nurture an intention of benefiting others - To accept only what is given, live with a sense of generosity and giving - To avoid sexual misconduct and cultivate respect for faithfulness and contentment - To practice kind speech and refrain from speaking lies - To avoid intoxication and respect mindfulness and safety Guest access The Lotus Guesthouse is a self check-in shared facility. This means there is no concierge or reception, as guests are able to check themselves in with our secure keypad system. Entry to the Lotus Guest house is via the Iron Gates at the front of the courtyard garden at Jamyang. Simply enter your unique access code (which will be provided in your booking confirmation) and enter through the gates, following the wooden path up to welcoming bright green door of the Lotus Guesthouse. Pop your code in once more here for access to the building and head on upstairs to your room. Other things to note ‘The Old Courthouse’ now the Lotus Guesthouse and Jamyang Buddhist Centre, is the old surviving Victorian police and Magistrates court in London. Built in 1869 and designed by the Architect Thomas Charles Sorby, the building has Grade II listed status and is set within a conservation area. The building served as a maximum security court for special remands, seeing a variety of folk residing here at Her Majesty’s pleasure, the most famous inmates being London’s notorious gangsters the Kray twins. Our single rooms in the Guesthouse are the former cells, steeped in history and certainly one of London’s most unique places to stay. Jamyang Buddhist Centre took up residence in the building in 1995 and began a program of repair and restoration after the The Old Courthouse had been neglected for many years; the old courtroom became the temple and meditation hall at the centre of the building and the old cells now house our residential volunteer team on the ground floor and the Lotus Guesthouse on the first floor.
