In that moment, the cares of the world drift away and we know we’re somewhere truly special. Stepping into The Mariner, we’re transported into another world — a place where nautical history and adventure collide, and where we get to be captain of our own story. The dark and moody hallway feels like the lower deck of a great ship, with cabin numbers on the doors and interiors that echo the 1940s. Every detail sparks curiosity. Ascending to the Captain’s Quarters, portraits of infamous sea dogs watch over us as we curl up by the fire with a book from the built-in shelves, or stretch out on the daybed. On sunny afternoons, we throw open the doors and sit on the deck overlooking the lake, soaking in the endless horizon. Upstairs, the vibe shifts. The light-filled lounge is inspired by an ocean liner’s upper deck — complete with quirky maritime touches like a lifejacket and water hose. Here, we gather around the dining table or cook together in the galley-style kitchen, all while bathed in natural light. The master suite is something out of first-class luxury, with a romantic four-poster bed and window seat looking out over the water. The second “first-class cabin” with its own ensuite feels equally indulgent, perfect for guests. And when it comes to food and wine? The Metung Hotel (known simply as “the Pub”) is a short stroll away — bustling, friendly, and best enjoyed with a waterside table. For breakfast, we wander down to Aroma Coffee House, or head into Lakes Entrance to buy prawns fresh off the boats, bringing them back to enjoy on the deck with a bottle of local wine. This isn’t just a holiday house — it’s a story, an experience, and a true escape on the Gippsland Lakes.
