Description

Our 1876 French Châteauesque home was the original Gatehouse of the sprawling Vanderbilt Estate in Hyde Park, New York. The home was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993 and was historically restored in early 2016. Find out more at thegatehouse (dot) us The space Designed in a French chateau-inspired style, each bay in the living and dining rooms features a pair of French doors that are topped with a rectangular transom. Other notable exterior features are the Vermont slate roof, the steeply pitched hip roof decorated with copper flashing and mahogany finials. A covered front porch spans the entire first floor. The Gatehouse's elegant plaster walls, oak hardwood floors, high ceilings and mahogany spiral staircase reflect the wealth and influence Walter Langdon incorporated into its appearance. Langdon died in 1894 and his estate was purchased by Frederick Vanderbilt the following year. As part of Vanderbilt's extensive redesign of the grounds, he commissioned the construction of a new stone gatehouse. Vanderbilt ordered the Gatehouse to be moved 50 yards south to the edge of the estate grounds where it now sits at 4419 Albany Post Road as a private residence. Guest access Enter the Gatehouse through the back porch into the kitchen. For your convenience the Gatehouse has a keyless Nest x Yale lock. The entry code will be provided to you upon confirmation of your booking. NOTE: There's no entry through the front porch French doors. The doors lock from the inside so you must have someone on the inside to unlock the doors for entry. There's ample parking in the driveway for about 4 vehicles. Other things to note There is so much to see and do in historic Hyde Park and the surrounding area. Biking, hiking, walking, antiquing, shopping, boating, eating and relaxing to you heart's content. Chefs should enjoy the stunning gourmet kitchen. Cook on the Pro-Style Gas Range. Store your fresh ingredients in the Sub-Zero refrigerator. Make use of the Le Creuset cookware, Laguiole Knives and other high-end resources stocked in the kitchen. Enjoy the stunning, deep farmhouse sink. Clean up using the quiet, panel-hidden Miele dishwasher. Outdoor enthusiasts should enjoy playing croquet, volleyball or horseshoes in the backyard. Or, simply relax in the backyard or rock your heart away on one of the rocking chairs on the front porch. The Gatehouse sits on the edge of the 211 acre Vanderbilt Estate, one of America's premier examples of the country palaces built by wealthy industrialists during the Gilded Age. The estate grounds are open everyday from sunrise to sunset. In addition to a tour of the house and servant quarters, you should stroll, jog or bike the grounds where you'll see stunning views of the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains. Be sure to visit the gorgeous Italian Gardens that are maintained by the Frederick William Vanderbilt Garden Association. History buffs should visit the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library, Museum and Mansion. Take the guided tour of the museum and stroll the gardens and trails on this 300 acre site. Dinsmore Golf Course is a public course just a couple of minutes north in Staatsburg. It offers panoramic views of the beautiful Hudson River and majestic Catskill Mountains. Antique lovers will be in heaven here in Dutchess County. Hyde Park is home to a number of great antique shops. The Gatehouse is conveniently located to make quick drives to Rhinebeck, Red Hook, Beacon and other great towns where you'll find numerous antique shops. Foodies will enjoy dining at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park. You can eat at one of the five amazing restaurants which range from modern to farm-to-table and from authentic Italian to new global favors. I'm also a fan of the restaurant scene in historic Rhinebeck which is just a quick 7 minute drive north of the gatehouse. Wine lovers should drive 18 miles west of the Gatehouse to enjoy a vineyard tour and wine tasting at Millbrook Vineyards & Winery. Called “the Hudson Valley’s flagship winery” by The New York Times and “a great place to visit” by The Wall Street Journal. Find out more at thegatehouse (dot) us
