Surroundings and location: The history of Riva San Vitale: The historic center of Riva San Vitale has numerous ancient finds, especially of Roman origin. These indicate continuous settlement since the Neolithic period. It is said that the founders of the village came from Italian Liguria and are thus the distant ancestors of the Rivensers. After the Ligurians came the Etruscans, who in turn were expelled by the Gauls. They extensively populated the area and gave today's Riva San Vitale its first place name: Primo Subino. During the subsequent Roman rule, Christianity was introduced. Finds and church walls document that Riva San Vitale plays an important role in its spread. The baptistery, the famous Romanesque baptismal church from the fifth century, is considered the oldest Christian building in Switzerland.
