We welcome you to our beautiful 17th Century coastguard home, situated on the SW Coastal path and 1min walk from Blue flag Challaborough beach. Renovated to suit modern life while retaining its original cottage feel; it is an ideal year round spot for water and wilderness loving families, couples and dog owners. Overlooking Burgh Island, the cottage is walking distance to 3 stunning beaches and two cosy 13th C pubs. Picturesque markets towns of Modbury, Kingsbridge, Salcombe, 20 min drive away. The space PROPERTY AND LOCATION PROPERTY The property is an old coastguard's cottage situated along a stunning section of the South West Coastal path. It is light, with calm coastal decor from top to bottom, along with plenty of welcoming character including a ship's beam spanning the living room ceiling and wooden floors throughout. When you arrive, you will be greeted with some welcome treats to ease you into your holiday. You will also find a thorough holiday handbook packed full of helpful instructions of ‘how to’s’ in the cottage and lots of ‘where to go’s’ for exploring the local area with family, friends and beloved dogs. There are a selection of books of walks and local knowledge of the area and we have prepared a series of laminated walking routes for your use during your stay. We are on hand for any questions or advice and just want you to love and enjoy the area as much as we do. BEDROOMS : 2 Double Bedrooms 1 Twin Bedroom (slightly narrower beds, most suitable for children) FIRST FLOOR : DOUBLE BEDROOM : A built-in bed brings you views of the sea from the window. A perfect start for planning the day ahead, whilst sipping on your first coffee. TWIN BEDROOM: Children have their own room complete with blackout blind, nightlight, lamp and a chest of story books to choose from. The following items are also available and can be left out on request: Travel Cot, child toilet seat, baby bath, high chair and additional blackout blind. SECOND FLOOR: DOUBLE BEDROOM: The loft bedroom (steep steps) has amazing views out to Burgh Island. Note: Please take care of babies/ young children on the stairs. The loft staircase is steep for those unstable on their feet. KITCHEN & DINING AREA: My partner and I both love cooking and you will find our kitchen stocked full of equipment in order to help you create the holiday meals you desire. With a range cooker, dishwasher, blender, baking equipment and numerous saucepans, trays, dishes and serving platters, you are ready to cook up a storm. The dining area (in the open plan kitchen) can be intimately lit for evening dining around the large table. LIVING AREA: Adjoining the kitchen, the living room has a large sofa, armchair and WiFi enabled TV complete with BBC iPlayer, Netflix, Amazon Prime TV and Disney+. There’s a den space under the open staircase with bean bags for kids to play in. BATHROOM: Shower, WC and sink (no bath). Baby bath can be provided on request. UTILITY ROOM: Washing machine & tumble dryer CONSERVATORY: A small conservatory at the front of the cottage overlooks the patio garden. There's room to dine, enjoy evening drinks and indulge in a cheeseboard from one of our delicious local producers. It also offers great shelter from windy days whilst still enjoying the view. PATIO GARDEN: There's a small patio garden with a bench and views to sea. Garden furniture is there for your use to enjoy a leisurely brunch, lunch or afternoon tea. The walls to our friendly neighbours' gardens are low so dogs need to be on a lead /tied to the bench. LOCATION Challaborough Bay Beach is a sheltered horseshoe cove with a fine sandy beach and rugged cliffs in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The beach is great for building sand castles and at low tide rock pools are exposed giving kids and adults alike the chance to get close to the marine life that lives around the shore. The gradient of the beach means that there are shallows waters from the shore perfect for paddling feet and building water confidence. The beach experiences swells, shore breaks and great surfing conditions, created by a combination of the beach’s shape and sand banks, making popular with surfers and bodyboarders. Beach lifeguards are stationed between May and October. Between April and October, the ABC Watersports centre operates out of the Parkdean holiday park opposite the house and in the bay (at other times of the year you can visit their main centre which is a 10 minute walk away in Bigbury). Here, you can organise surf and SUP lessons as well as wet suit and watersports equipment hire, plus dolphin and diving trips can be booked here too. ENJOYING ALL SEASONS WITH US: There are many pastimes to enjoy regardless of the weather and season, including; - Walk across at low tide or take the sea tractor at high tide to the iconic Burgh Island with its famous Art Deco Hotel. Enjoy the island; watch the tides meet and even book yourself in for afternoon tea or dinner. - Watersports - with award winning blue flag Challaborough Bay 1 min walk and the expansive beaches of Bigbury and Bantham 15 walk, take a surf lesson, learn to paddle board or kayak around the island. - Walking on the South West Coastal path - Discovering hidden tidal bays and rock pooling on your doorstep - Eating out at local pubs, restaurants and cafes - Being close to the beautiful sandy beach and sea - Visit one of the many National Trust premises or South Devon attractions nearby. SUMMER BONUS: From May until October, lifeguards are on duty at Challaborough and Bantham Bays. Surf or paddle boarding gear can be hired from the Discovery Surf Centre and ABC Watersports just across the road in the Parkdean holiday park or next to the Venus cafe in Bigbury. Outside school holidays (at their discretion) you can use the swimming pool & playground at the holiday park. WINTER WARMERS: Enjoy long walks along the cliffs and beaches or a circular walk interjected with a cosy pub stop or two, then head back to stoke up the log burner. We will leave you a basket of logs; kindling and a bottle of wine ready for your first night, just to help ease you into relaxation. DOGS: We welcome well-behaved dogs but ask that you supervise them and take into consideration the low garden wall. There are lots of dog friendly beaches nearby in low season, and 15 min walk away in high season (dog friendly beaches & pubs/cafes are listed in the cottage handbook at the property but please message us if you would like more details prior to arrival). Challaborough beach itself is closed to dogs between the 1st May and 30th September but dog friendly beaches are a ten/fifteen minute walk away. Guest access On street parking outside the cottage, we also a private parking spot less than 100 metres away (explained in the arrival directions). Front patio garden and sunny conservatory with views to Challaborough beach, Bigbury on Sea and Burgh Island. Private access is to the front via steps, but there is an almost step free (4 steps) access via a path to the back of the cottage. Other things to note Other things to note: Please take care of babies/ young children on the stairs. The loft staircase is steep for those unstable on their feet. Please make sure you do not leave attic Velux windows open if you are not using the room as this will flood the upstairs in the rain
