Guest access Appledore is a quaint old fisherman's village built on a hillside with mazes of narrow lanes leading to an attractive medley of closely packed, brightly painted cottages, decorated with hanging baskets. The quay is delightfully busy, somewhere to sit and have breakfast or lunch and enjoy the view, perhaps a spot of crabbing. Famous for its artists and craftsmen, the village now boasts a festival with the Appledore Crafts Company where you can find a broad range of arts and crafts from ceramics, photography, jewellery and paintings. There are walks alongside the river towards Bideford and Westward Ho! .which hosts a variety of pubs and restaurants and offer a wide range of local seafood. Make sure to catch a seasonal ferry from Appledore to the sweeping beach of Instow to sit and watch the colourful boats bobbing on the water. One of the most beautiful beaches in North Devon. Other beaches to visit nearby are: Gray Sands – 6 minutes drive – This is an idyllic spot to while away a quiet afternoon. Just around the corner from the glorious sandy stretch of Westward Ho! It’s quieter and still has sand to stroll along even when the tide is in. Westward Ho! 9 minute drive – it is also a beautiful walk from Appledore along the South West Coastal Path. There is a long sandy beach backed by a pebble ridge with Northam Burrows Country Park accessible at one end of this beach and offers the best of both sand rock pools and nature. Instow Beach – 12 minutes by car or a 15 minute boat ride - Located on the edge of the Torridge estuary, Instow beach is blessed with fine, soft sand. As the beach doesn’t face directly into the Atlantic its sheltered from the surf. Beaches a little further away… Clovelly Beach – 25-minute drive – Clovelly has a small pebble beach below this historic village. The area is good for snorkelling and the beach is protected from the strongest waves by the old harbour wall. Ilfracombe Beach – 40 minute drive - 2 Miles to the West of Ilfracombe is Lee Bay a charming sand and shingle beach backing onto an equally charming village. Other Attractions – The North Devon Maritime Museum where you can discover more about the fascinating seafaring history of Appledore through interesting exhibitions, photographs and interactive displays. Great for a rainy day! However if you fancy your own adventure on the seas, there is an abundance of boat and fishing trips, just look out for signs along the Quay. Skern Lodge for those wishing for something more energetic, with its climbing walls, high ropes course, rafting, kayaking and surfing, something for all. The Big Sheep is only four miles away, with its fun rides, pets’ corner, adventure park and famous sheep racing. The Milky Way and North Devon Wake Park are absolutely worth a visit. Places to Eat For a modestly sized village, Appledore has excellent choices of places to eat and drink, including lovely spots for a crab sandwich or a slice of homemade cake. John’s of Appledore which is directly below the apartment, is a well-respected local establishment with a grocery shop, a mouth-watering selection of deli food and a welcoming café. There are of course some excellent fish and chips shops in Appledore including Sylvester’s and The Royal Plaice. Many traditional pubs, mostly with beamed ceilings, flagstone floors and comfy sofas in front of open fires with waterside views and some excellent local ciders and ales such as Hobgoblin, Otter Amber and Betty Stogs. Some notable restaurants - The Royal George – known for its menu of innovative dishes with twists on traditional classics The Beaver and The Champ – great atmosphere with home cooked food and regular live music The Seagate – family atmosphere and Mediterranean-style walled garden Flame Factory – notable for delicious stone-baked pizzas and meat from the grill. The Walks The South West Coat Path winds its way through Appledore offering scenic walks along North Devon’s dramatic coastline. One of our favourite treks starts at Appledore’s main car park on the seafront and follows the coast path for several miles to Northam Burrows Country Park, and an opportunity to view its diverse range of coastal habitats.
