Description

(Sorry this property burned in the glass Fire) Adorable historic cabin, perched on a canyon with beautiful vineyard and mountain views. Built with the 1885 *St Helena Rural Health Retreat* (now St. Helena hospital). One bedroom, sitting area and small kitchen. Private, cozy, natural scenery, four minutes to the restaurants and boutiques downtown St Helena. Central location for exploring vineyards/wineries of Napa Valley. Host cottage about 40 feet away with shared connected deck. The space It's the setting that makes the cabin, but it's a super cozy charming space. Cabin is ~140 years old, with a sleeping-porch style bedroom, small claw-foot tub, 1950's vintage Wedgewood stove/oven, sitting/living room with loveseat-size futon sofa, small desk, and zinc-top bistro table & chairs. DETAILS: BEDROOM Iron-frame QUEEN bed with pillow-top mattress, natural cotton sheets and down comforter with cotton duvet cover. Open-beam bedroom ceiling and windows on three sides create a treetop retreat, a wonderful sleeping room. The AC is a window unit in the bedroom, much needed in hot summer days but never needed at night. In winter and early spring, you'll hear the seasonal creek and waterfall in the canyon below. LIVING/DINING Bistro table and 2 chairs, small desk, and small futon sofa. The futon can be opened up to a full-size mattress. The futon is super comfortable for sleeping. Small flat-screen TV with basic channels. We discourage watching TV news when on vacation! However, I do maintain a selection of classic movies on VCR for the old-fashioned 13" TV/VCR combo hidden in the bedroom armoire :-) KITCHEN: - Keurig coffeemaker (stocked with Peet's Major Dickason's blend, bring your own or let me know your preferred roast!) - Full size frig & freezer - 24" four-burner natural gas Wedgewood stove with great little oven. - Small counter area for prep - Microwave, toaster oven and plenty cookware, plus my house for borrowing! - Fiesta ware, cutlery, wine glasses. I keep Peet's coffee stocked and sugar/sweeteners/half-n-half to get you started in the morning. If you need pantry ingredients when cooking (mustard, vinegar, baking supplies, etc.), please ask as I likely have them to share. NOTE on SUMMER HEAT: Cabin has been updated (June 2019) with multiple layers of insulation and new siding on south-facing (sunny) side, a new gable vent fan in the attic, and a new, stronger (10k BTU, smartphone-controlled) A/C window unit located in the bedroom, with remarkable improvement vs prior smaller/older A/C unit that one guest complained about during a killer heat wave. Gratefully, in any case, the Napa Valley always cools down at night :-) Guest access The property is about 2/3 acre, fenced from the street, mostly hillside, with the host cottage on the same lot 40 feet away. The spaces have separate parking areas and access gates but is all open and interconnected once inside the gate. A large common deck and stone pathway connect the two cottages, wrapped around a huge Douglas Fir tree that keeps the compound mostly shaded in our hot summers. The tree is situated JUST RIGHT (or perhaps the cabins were) to provide privacy as you come and go. Guests enjoy a private front deck with porch swing, and are welcome to use the larger shared deck on the lower level. The photos include my view of the cabin front porch from the main house to give you an idea of the proximity/privacy. I'd have to really work to see what you're up to over there--and I don't! Other things to note One friendly dog lives here! Oscar is a very social cattle dog mix who will be enthusiastically wagging on your arrival. He LOVES visitors. All his life, friendly people arrive through your gate and sneak him treats... lucky little guy.
