With a "work hard, play hard" attitude, the town became known for a permissive approach toward drinking, gambling and prostitution. Illegal yet condoned, brothel-based sex work openly flourished. Locals believed that sex work prevented rape and bolstered the economy, so long as it was regulated and confined to the northeastern part of town. East of Wallace, the Route of the Hiawatha (rails-to-trails) and the Lookout Pass ski area are popular with locals and tourists. Wallace is a very walkable town.
