Plus, you will find further details about places to go, beach maps plus a taverna guide. You may meet the owners when they come to change the linen with the cleaner or when they look after the pool. They are a lovely couple & you will probably get the feel of Cretan hospitality after meeting them. They are there also, to ensure that you are enjoying yourselves too. Around Villa Afrati there are a few neighbouring homes & so you will feel safe that you have neighbours but not intrusive as you still have your privacy inside the grounds of the villa. The villa is located just outside the village of Plaka, approx 800m, which means you could walk to the village square to have a meal in the evenings & stroll back again. There are several tavernas in the square and a lovely atmosphere in the evenings. A well stocked mini market is just before the square. The seaside village of Almyrida with it's shallow sandy beach is just 2kms away where you have more choices of tavernas & cafe bars, there is a lovely bubbling atmosphere & to sit literally right next to the sea & enjoy a meal is superb. If you head inland for short 15min drive to the village of Gavalohori you can visit the small Cretan Museum or one of the tavernas. Two of which are highly recommended is Monica's in the square & Arosmari in the back streets of the village. Georgiopolis beach is also worth a drive where there is a long sandy beach which stretches for 7kms & the Lake Kournas is nearby for a paddle boat ride. It is best to have a car in order to get around & explore the area & Crete. There isn't a local bus that is within walking distance. There is a parking space inside the grounds of the villa for your car. You could walk into Almyrida which is 2kms & more or less downhill & then get a taxi back. There is usually a couple of local taxis parked in the center of Almyrida. It would be approx 10 Euros to get back from Almyrida.
