Warm and cozy vacation cabin built with your vacation in mind, a place having some illusion of being rustic and with all the comforts and conveniences of home. Pictures of the interior don't convey the ambiance inside. Especially in the evenings with the light from the fireplace reflecting off the vaulted ceiling. If you don't want to walk into a rental that looks like the house you just left. Then this may be the place for you! Here you can have remote, secluded, quiet or crowds anytime you want, it's just simply your call. (having said that, if you want to press the flesh and non-stop excitement every day you should really be looking at something in Bar Harbor) Winter Harbor is less commercialized than the other tourist spots but there's still a lot to do especially those guests who desire a more relaxed, less crowded atmosphere. There are shops, restaurants, kayak/bike rentals and other businesses to explore including one of the oldest golf courses in the country. You can purchase lobster fresh off the boat that like everything else here won't break the bank. Two weeks during the summer there is an arts festival nestled around a one day lobster festival and year round just about every weekend there is a program, theater, concert, dance or some other event going on. Acadia National Park is the most visited national park in the country and the majority of that onslaught is to Mount Desert Island. Fortunately we don't experience the immeasurable daily volume of people, traffic or cruise ships that MDI sees. Here you won't feel like you are playing dodgems on our sidewalks or have to make reservations in advance to get into the restaurant you want to go to. Anyway, Winter Harbor is a smaller seaside community across the bay from Bar Harbor with the only section of ANP on the mainland. The entrance road to the Schoodic District is a few hundred yards down Main Street where you'll find miles of hiking and biking trails. At Frazers Point there are picnic tables, many with fire rings and also a long pier and float for fishing. The views from the seaside loop around the park are gorgeous. Schoodic Head the highest point on the peninsula offers panoramic views east, west, north and south. At the southern most tip of the park is Schoodic Points expansive ledges that reach down into the sea with the waves breaking against them. And finally there is the Bar Harbor-Winter Harbor Ferry making daylight runs every hour back and forth during the tourist season. Combined both legs of the trip are a 14 mile leisurely 1 hour trip 100% I live less than 100 yds away, mow the lawn and take the trash. I do try to say hi when I see someone but give everyone their privacy. Winter Harbor is a small town with a full-time population of a over 500 that swells to around 1500 starting in the spring through late fall and there are other small villages scattered around the peninsula that also grow dramatically in size during the tourist season. The entrance to the Schoodic District: Acadia National Park is one hundred yards off of Main St and the exit from the park is in Birch Harbor a few miles to the east. There are a lot of things that go on here all summer but the two major ones are an arts festival that usually starts the last week in July and goes until immediately after the lobster festival on the second Saturday in August. Plus almost every weekend year round Schoodic Arts hosts a dance, play, theater, concert or some other event. There is a grocery store, 5&10, restaurants, bakery, shops, galleries, library and of course a town pier. We also have one of the oldest golf courses in the country and a yacht club for those that come by sea. Although summer is busy that is not the case by the end of September when businesses start shutting down. In fact, by October the area can be downright sleepy till it's time to wake up again the spring. A car is necessary but also during the tourist season there is a free shuttle bus service that starts in Winter Harbor and tours the park and area before returning. The bus runs every half hour or so and stops are scattered. Not that it matters since the drivers are more than happy to pick you up if you wave them down from the side of the road. If you are going to be pulling any kind of trailer *PLEASE* first let me know the length of the trailer including the tongue. There is not a lot of room here and unless you're a wizard I wouldn't do it? 6/10's mile to Main St and the ocean. 1 mile to the park. The internet is DSL and up to 15Mbps which is "normally" enough to watch a hi-def movie while someone else is also using the internet. Stream ROKU TV: Watch what seems like an endless selection of free channels, movies and sitcoms. REGULAR (OTA)TV CHANNELS: NBC, CBS ABC, True Crime, Quest, Get, Twist, ShopLC, HSN, QVC CW, Decades, Circle, Ion, Grit, Fox, Mpbn, Create, World, Kids (NOTE: TV Antenna reception can be poor depending on atmospheric conditions) Although we do not purchase DVD's any longer there are also many older movies to watch. There is a thru the wall air conditioner or also fans if desired. Laundry - Cold water wash bring your own detergent
