Description
Indigo House Gion is located just a few steps from our other properties, The Gion House and Amber House Gion, on a quiet cul-de-sac street in Gion, with no through traffic. The space Indigo House Gion went under a thorough renovation recently, by renowned Kyoto-based architect, Geoffrey Moussas. It is located just a few steps from The Gion House and Amber House Gion, on a quiet cul-de-sac street in Gion, with no through traffic. Indigo House Gion was a tea house or “ochaya," (place of geisha entertainment) in the middle of last century. It has an interior garden surrounded by walls of glass. The rear bedrooms have windows facing south, with an expansive view of the area of Kenninji Temple where you can see the monk’s cemetery and vegetable gardens, as well as the buildings where the monks live. There’s a lot of blue sky and green trees, and natural light. You can hear the sound of monks chanting their prayers early in the morning. Indigo House Gion Lower Level has its own entrance. It's most distinctive design feature is the interior garden, surrounded by huge sheets of glass, with an ancient stone lantern and lush greenery. The two bedrooms are both in traditional tatami mat style.. The spacious master bedroom (facing Kenninji Temple) has a high quality extra-wide double bed suitable for a couple, while the second bedroom has a multiple layer futon. The second bedroom is compact, and thus is suitable only for a single adult. The living/kitchen is between the two bedrooms, and has a sofa, plus large dining table with four chairs. The interior garden adds a dramatic element to the living/kitchen area. The bathroom is spacious and luxurious. From the large bath tub, one has a private view of the garden. And the shower has an extra-wide shower head. There is radiant heating throughout the bath and living areas, assuring warmth during the colder months. And of course, each of the tatami bedrooms has a high power electric heating system (which functions as an airconditioner in the warmer months.) In it's dilapidated pre-renovation state, this house was filmed by CNN for a the program called "On the Road," in a segment called "Saving Kyoto's town houses." It was also filmed for a program on ANA’s inflight entertainment system. Indigo House Gion is furnished and decorated in a modern yet simple high-end style (comparable to our other properties.) Other things to note Kyoto accommodation tax of ¥200 per person per night is included in rates. TV is not available until further notice.
